copper horn
« on: May 16, 2020, 04:21:36 AM »
I use copper on a lot of projects in my shop, mostly weathervanes and gate accents. With lots of "scraps" I like to experiment with copper and have made lots of bowls and boxes and stuff. Here is a horn, inspired by the banded horns that Tim Crosby makes.
The idea was to make a metal horn with a twist. I made the piece around a tapered iron bar and I made it in three pieces. Each piece is silver soldered into a cone and the end diameters were adjusted to match up smoothly. I lead soldered the three cones together then filed them to get all of the hammer marks and to get a fair curve. The solder joints were melted apart and the rings were turned from apple and the pieces were reassembled on the  rings with a slight twist. The pouring end is threaded like many horn tips and the end plug has a Henry Diston saw button rather than a staple. Tip to tip the horn is 10"

Great creative idea and well done “Horn”!   A cool take on a powder flask that I can imagine someone like yourself with extra material and expertise making back in the day.

The neat thing on this fine horn is the longer you use it the more the copper will naturally tarnish and give it the aged patina we all love to see. Thank you so much for posting this.

How unique, I don't think I have ever seen another copper full sized horn. Seen small priming horns and flask's but never a full sized one.
