Thanks to Dave Rase this turned into a usable stock. Buttplate is going to end up exactly where I wanted it.

Looking at the grain pattern on the butt it appears that stock is quarter-sawn. Is that correct?

Whatever stresses were in that piece of wood are now stable. If that stock blank was stressed it would of moved after I trimmed off the top half of the barrel channel and inlet the barrel. I have had stocks warp up to 1/2" after inletting a barrel due to stress. I have also had barrel channels close up on me after drilling the ramrod hole. I have also had ramrod holes clamp down on my ramrod drill so hard that I could hardly complete drilling. This stock blank remained stable as a rock.

That wood was stressed BEFORE it warped. Now it is where it naturally wants to be.

A couple guns from now it's going to be another Lehigh with a side slammer brass box. The stock has some interesting curl in it. It has a very petite swamped .44 cal barrel by Hoyt. I'd be surprised if it goes 5.5lbs when the gun is done. I'd like to keep this one for myself.

The only stress will probably be on Mike iffin he runs into a problem with it.

Type "G" or Carolina gun. It's off to CA in a week and a half or so.

3 hours in the shop today in 110* "feels like" heat.

This has turned out to be a delightful piece of wood. Hard and cuts excellent. Barrel and breech plug are in and pinned, lock and guts are in, so is the buttplate. Just inlet the trigger and started making a trigger plate when sweat started dripping off the ends of my fingers. Figured it was time to quit. 9 hours total so far. I cut all the excess wood of the sides of the barrel and it has stayed stable, as I thought it would. This hoyt barrel is a gem, .44 rifled, 44 3/8" long, 7/8" breech 5/8" waist and 13/16" muzzle. Like a little fairy wand....maybe that isn't the best image for a manly gun.....

I might get a pic up later....maybe not.

Allen built one a while back called the “Fly rod”, I don’t think the Fairy Wand is nearly as manly, but you could pull it off!

Yes, Ferry Wand is much "manlier" than Fairy Wand. Going to make a handsome rifle no matter what it's called.

Looks good. I thought I was clicking at a good pace. I received my stock from David Rase the same time as you and I just finished making and dovetailing the under lugs last night. Is that a Dale Johnson lock?
