Original Dodrige county West Virginia pouch and horn
« on: May 20, 2020, 06:23:42 PM »
Hello all. Here is a Dodrige county pouch and horn from ca 1850. It came with a halfstock 30 cal rifle I bought back in 2011, and built a close copy of. Both guns now live out west. Rifle was attributed to Sam Sherwood.
Only thing in pouch was the tin of caps. No strap on pouch, as you see it .

Thanks for posting.  Very interesting.  Is that bag turned except for the bit in the middle (creating the point at the bottom)?

I think that pucker at the bottom is where the leather selvage on the inside was not trimmed close, and predictably buckled when turned.  I could be wrong though.  I sure have been wrong before, and will be in the future.  God Bless,   Marc

Hi Jeff, welcome aboard. Nice stuff. I am going to post pics of the rifle seen in the picture,it was taken to Texas by descendant of orig owner,if I can find the paperwork I will post more info here. Dealer posted on gunbroker where I saw it and bought it. At the same time there was a near identical rifle wayyyyy out in Idaho, and I should have bought it too, but didn't.
I only had Whiskers WV book to judge builder on, but several friends here said most likely Sherwood.
You need to come down and shoot with us,Mountaineer Flintlocks. Or just hang out and bs,which I do a good bit of.
Heres some pics. Grimy ol front stuffer, but what stories it could tell.Best regards, Dave f in Charleston
