Newly finished Armstrong.
« on: May 20, 2020, 08:28:46 PM »
Hello all,   After posting my granddaughter's $60.00 pistol a couple members asked to see a rifle. Well here is one I finished a couple weeks ago. I know it goes against all the rules on mixing schools but its for one of my sons, and he likes Armstrong's, but likes western Pa. patchboxes better. All the inlays are hammered out of old silver coins. It has a Getz 50 cal. barrel and Chambers lock. Hope to get it out and work up a load soon. Sorry for the poor pictures. My old cell phone is worn out like its owner.

Beautiful. Did you use a swamped barrel?  A precarve stock/parts set?

I've been thinking of making another Armstrong.   When I did my first one I used a 13/16 straight barrel because that is what was available as a parts set.  I'd like to use a lightweight swamped barrel this time.  What are the options?

No it was from a plank. And the softest piece of maple I ever worked with, should of never tried to carve it. Its a strait 7/8' barrel a friend of mine won at are benefit shoot  in Altoona Pa for the Pa flintlock team many years ago. My opinion is there easier to built from a plank.

I agree, that is a nice looking rifle. I'll bet it shoots as good as it looks.

Great looking rifle.  Nice job with the carving, especially if the wood was soft!  That makes it all the more difficult.

That's a real beauty and quite correct for an Armstrong rifle.

Thanks for all the kind words. I have been a little reluctant to post any pictures of my guns on this forum after seeing all the amazing work done by the members here.

No need to be reluctant.  That is a fine looking rifle.  I especially like the finish and carving.  That tang carving is tasty.  God Bless,   Marc

Very nice!  Do you hand engrave or use an air graver?

Barry, I always used a hammer and chisel before. This was the first gun I used an air graver. I built one from the videos on Youtube from Rich Alexander. Fun project and it works great, less than $100.00 and your up and running.

Thanks for posting that rifle as well as your pistol. Also welcome to the forum. Iknow from experience that there a lot of great gun builders lurking out there, and you are one of them.

Hunter,

I like your rifle very much.
I also make a John Armstrong rifle, but on scale.
Is it possible you send me some pictures of your rifle?
I need a picture of the backside of the buttplate so I can see the shape of the cheek piece.
It's hard to see this on pictures and on the drawing I have.

Thank you for your support!
Adrie

Thanks Alacran and everybody else for the welcoming to the forum and all the words of encouragement. Maybe a new member here, but have been reading, looking and learning from this forum for a long long time. Audrie I'll try to get you some of the pictures you asked for but my rifle is just a copy of what I see in pictures, so not really to scale.
