I stopped using water altogether about a year ago. I use denatured alcohol to swab and break up fouling at the end of shooting, then I clean with WD40 it works perfect. and I don't put rust down my bore,,,,,,,,,,,,,
I have never "harvested" a critter but I have killed quite a few,,,,,,,,,,,

Wolf: you must have been using hot water. Cold or at most tepid water won't rust the barrel if after cleaning you dry it out with patches and then use your WD-40. I have been doing this since the 70's and never have found rust, in fact my bores shine like mirrors.

I'm with Mike on cleaning with cold water, drying, then I use a WD40 flush, patching that out, wipe her done, put back together,
then store muzzle down.

I did use pretty warm water. but I tried the WD40 and never looked back. I bought a gallon can of that and the alcohol, it works good and the clean up is fast,,,,,,,,

IMO, if your gun won’t clean up with plenty of cold water, your doing something wrong. Powder fowlings that haven’t been subjected to some kind of exotic oil, grease, or heaven knows what else, clean up with cold water.

I agree HHorsee - no matter what lube I use, the rifles or smoothbores or pistols all clean up perfectly with cold water.
