Turnscrew, rustic type!
« on: June 10, 2020, 06:38:37 AM »
Gents,

I've made a couple of these.
One not shown is a lot smaller, and this one is only about 3 1/4" over all.

The blade is made from a Mauser barrel band spring. (V tough steel) and is nice and thin for the Chambers slots in the vise -pin and sidenails.
The handle is made from the toe-bone of a buffalo, found in the muskeg here on the farm.   They come naturally nice and brown after forever in the ground.

Best,
Richard.

Irregular handle gives lots of purchase.
These work so well I won't go afield without one.   :-)

Best,
Richard.

Awesome work Richard!

Pretty cool that the materials already have some history behind them too.

Thanks for kind remarks, everyone.
The scratches on the blade of the turnscrew are from pressure knapping flints.

I don't know if the bones come from an Indian encampment, as the small and thin bones (like deer) are all in one piece, but all the big buffalo and other large bones are broken, as though for extracting marrow.
They vary from brown to 'blue' in colour, so must be pretty old.  How long does it take for bones to go grey-blue all the way through?

Best,
Richard.
