"Ideal" offhand barrel length for 13/16ths, .36 ???
« on: August 11, 2009, 05:47:42 AM »
What length barrel would you consider to have the perfect "hang" for offhand shooting?   The barrel will be a 36 caliber and 13/16ths straight (non-swamped).   The rifle will be a halfstock.   Thanks for your thoughts!

I've a 32" that hangs well, might could be a lil longer and a 42" that is muzzle heavy and steady.

For a half stock I'd think 36" +/- 2" ought to work fine

An offhand rifle can be adjusted for "hang" by several tricks.  An earlier style can be used with a longer barrel  if the butt section is made larger.  A later Golden age with small buttplates and hence less weight in back might be shorter.  More than one offhand rifle has a bit of lead in the butt to balance them out.  The suggestions made are good ones, I am just pointing out that there are ways to adapt to about any length and your build can be determined by desired style.

This is such an "individual" thing it's difficult to give a definitive answer.  It depends mostly on the build, strength, height etc. of the shooter.  For me, being short, 36" x 3/4" works with a 38" barrel in my Southern .36.  My .50 EV is 42".  Both are great, especially the EV, but it does wear me out trying to hold it up.

All the advice above is good - but too, the age and condition of the shooter is of much importance - as well as individual 'tastes'.  I personally find a heavy straight octagonal barrel to hold better - however many prefer swamped barrels - I must admit some heavy section swamped barrels do hold nicely - with 42" barrels and lots of meat in the breech, like the 42" (or is it 44").50 in "C" weight, ie; Taylor's virginia rifle.

Light 42" to 44" "A" weights in swamped don't hold well for me unless .40 or smaller calibre - yet while other guys think of anything over 8 pounds as being too heavy, I prefer 10 pounds of more for purely offhand shooting.  Short, 32" 1 1/8" straight octagonal barrels hold particularly well in large calibres, 20 bore or much larger, but the stock design must be right for a pocket of the shoulder hold - this brings up another factory - stock shape - shoulder, joint or arm hold - all require different ergonomics in a stock - along with all the 'other' factors.

Being able to handle a variety of rifles will tell you more than suggestions here.

I built a 36 half stock for my wife and cut the barrel to 35". It balances well, but I left the stock a little too long @ 14". I suspect if the stock were closer to 13" the barrel should be a little shorter also.

Well now Pete- Either chop that stock back or find a longer limbed woman! ;D

Longer limbs are OK, IF all else goes well with the design. ;D

I think I may just build her another gun. That is cheaper by far than exchanging women (I've been down that route already). Besides, this one's a keeper.

The rifle I am currently building for woods roaming, is .40 cal. and 7/8" straight so the weight per inch should be very close to yours.  My barrel is 38 inches long and the rifle weighs in at just over eight pounds.  I can live with that.  It has a very good feel to it also.  In the Dixie catalog, they have some really handy information, like the weight of barrels of different calibers and dimensions per inch of length.  I used this to try to get an 8 pound gun.  I got close.

Hmm, my 7/8" x 42" .40 cal. weighs 9 pounds 15 ounces - perfect for offhand shooting - for me.

Daryl,

I might shoot a 10 lb. rifle at a range, but am not carrying it too far on a woods walk.  I once tried to trade my ex brother in law my WInchester Superex Model 1 (8+ pounds) for his Franchi aluminum job at the bottom of a long ridge we had to walk back up.  He only agreed when we were back at the car.  Too late then.  That was 20 years ago too.

The 14 bore weighs 9 1/2 pounds - at 59, back back and shoulder, I still find it to be perfect for carrying. I'd rather have some weight in the barrel for holding, than a light gun that I can't hold well even when not walking  - preferences differ, of course, person to person.
