bear pistol shoulder holster
« on: June 14, 2020, 03:17:19 AM »
Put together this shoulder holster for my bear pistol I recently finished.  The idea for this holster comes from photos of an original holster for a Gillespie bear pistol that Dennis Glazener published in his book "The Gillespie Gun Makers of East Fork NC"  I do not consider myself a leather worker by a long shot.  I can say I am fairly pleased with the results of this holster.  The strap goes around the left side of my neck and the holster hangs high tucked under my right arm.  The butt of the pistol rides up against my chest and the whole unit is very comfortable to carry.

David,
Now you need a couple of Plott hounds, maybe a Mountain Cur or two, load that pistol for B'ar then strike out across the wilds of western Washington state in search of a nice bruin  :)

Thanks for the compliment.  One thing I did change from the original was the attachment of the strap.  In the photos of the original it looks like the straps were attached using leather lacing.  I did this originally but worried that the lacing would, and it did, catch on the pistol.  At my wifes suggestion, I removed the lacing and tied French knots.  It is a bit rougher on the exterior but the inside of the holster is nice and smooth.

Broke out Dennis's fine book to compare yours to the original. This is a fine tribute to the original. The Gillespie family must be smiling on you right now. Thank you for posting.

Man....I want one of those. To quote the Hamburglar, or was it Stimpy? "I'd gladly pay you Tuesday for that bear gun today".  :)

That is so cool David.  It really looks like an adapted pommel holster for saddle pistols.  I imagine people did that back in the day.  I really like it.  You are a man of many talents.   God Bless,   Marc
