New Hawk Pistol
« on: June 14, 2020, 04:24:18 PM »
After my last post I contacted everyone I could think of who might know of or have more photos of the Hawk pistol..Some of those contacted went out of their way in an attempt to help and some I never heard from. But the bottom line, none of our efforts turned up the bottom and top views. I particularly wanted to see the trigger guard.. I knew it had a piercing in the front extension that contains an ivory heart. I didn't want to do my own thing on the heart..So I decided to make the guard similar to those on his long guns..JTR had provided good photos of that..So that is how I shaped the trigger guard. On the lock bolt side I made another change. Since a true copy of the pistol was impossible, I went with a lock bolt plate he used on some of his rifles. On the barrel another change. Both myself and Shreckmeister likes the barrel inlay he used on swivels. So the pistol has a similar inlay. Because of available space it had to be much shorter. I  debated about doing that. But glad I did..
Joe stein wanted to see what I would do on the pistol,  Joe I hope you approve..................   LP

Now that's one fine bit of work, with lot's of Hawk touches including the filing 1/16th on the barrel flats, engraving style, and many many details! A fine job all the way around!

I wonder if it's possible to move these pictures to its own thread, instead of an extension of this old one?

But given that it's new, shouldn't it be in Gun Building, and not the Antique Gun Collecting section?

You made a beautiful pistol, Louie. There are a lot of great features to it. I am at a loss for words to describe all that I like about it.
Thanks for posting the pictures.

Louie, what outstanding work!   Every picture is full of details .   Now I know why you got a little grumpy while making that.
A  N. Hawk swivel  would make a nice pair.  Just saying.

That is fantastic, Louie.  Thank you for showing it.  There are lots of things to admire, but your attention to historical details makes your work unique and really sets it apart.

All the best,
Jim

Louie, do you have a 3-D printer? Seem like just a few days ago that you were inquiring about Hawk pistols and now here it is in real time. I have only ever seen one Hawk pistol, an unsigned one, with brass inlays rather than silver inlay work, a long, long time ago. Best as I can recall from that you have hit it our of the ball park on the Hawk style. What a beauty! Thank you for bringing it in to let us have a look.

That is a beautiful trigger guard. Did you fabricate the whole thing or did you change an existing casting? Excellent pistol.

Beautiful pistol, love the shape of the stock . Could you tell us about the barrel, length size and caliber? Is it taperd?

Best regards

Thanks everyone !  I am glad you like the pistol.. The lock is an original flint action.. The barrel is straight, 10 inches long and about 40 Cal.. I have no idea what the original  is..  I made everything but the lock..  The trigger guard is one piece and cut from a piece of one inch thick brass..The guard is not that wide.  In my weak memory its .780..  I didn't get it exactly like I wanted. But not enough off to start over.
Mr No Gold it certainly seemed longer to me.

Great looking pistol Louie. First class as usual, carving that guard out of a solid chunk of brass would be a daunting task for any one but you.  8) Love it.
