Mule Ear Safety Idea
« on: June 18, 2020, 05:51:33 PM »

The Scota4570 safety gave me an idea.

Kind of looks like a wish bone. Not even sure if you could make it fit.

It would close as you cock the hammer, laying flat under the hammer.

Not sure exactly how the spring hump would look, but I hope you get the idea!

Many mule ear locks were made without a half cock notch . An old timer told me to just put a small piece of twig under the hammer. That way, the hammer did not rest on the primer and as you cocked the gun, the twig fell away. When I used to fire this type gun, I used this method and it works  ... even with over under percussion guns

I made a deer antler wedge that fits under my mule ear hammer and is attached by a thong to the trigger guard.  When the hammer is cocked, the wedge falls away.  A simple matter to install the wedge after reloading the rifle.

Yes, my personal collecting interest is percussion over under guns .... it's kind of a backwater collecting area, with most folks knowing they exist but not too interested in the amazing variety and ingenuity of the makers in the 1830 to 1880 era

Often the set triggers used with these locks are the type that must be set to fire.  It’s sort of a safety in a way. I don’t set the trigger till ready to fire.

Yep, We tend to over think and over engineer a lot of the old timers methods.
