Shop-built stock vises

Not shop made, but this is what I use.

I use a modified vice.  I removed the pipe jaws.  Then machined a flat.  Then drilled and tapped the bolt holes.  The wood jaws are oak.  I did not make bushings of smooth sided special bolts for the jaws.  It seems to be holding up fine.  When I want to work on metal I just spin it 180*.  When the jaws a tightened the swivel is locked.  This is the cheap chinese version, bondo and all.

I used the vices three mounting holes to secure the whole vice to the milling machine table.  I tighened the jaws to lock it in place.  I then machined the outboard pipe jaw flat topped.

I replaced the wood on mine with 1” maple to extend the jaws up 4”.  Gave a little more versatility for height adjustment.

I use two vises, a big solid Holland #14 that is good for holding the squared up blank for barrel inletting, and z Versa Vise mounted in a Wilton Pow R Arm. The Wilton makes a good vise better and will allow ultimate control over your workpiece.

I think I'll do that with mine, should allow me to stand up straighter at the bench when doing close work.  Thanks for the tip.

With this setup you can sit or stand and work on any part of a gun. The post is adjustable for height and will swivel or lock. The rest is good for long guns.

Jerry, I really like that setup. It looks to be very versatile, and would work great for me, as I prefer to work either standing, or seated at a tall stool. I might copy that design, or parts of it, for my new shop.
