Bag and horn just finished
« on: August 13, 2009, 04:03:53 AM »
I started sewing on this bag on the ride to Dixon's last month.  It was 10 hours each way, so I got a good deal done, but I liked to have bled to death from jabbin' myself with the needle on ever one of them dammed expansion joints in Ohio!

The leather is from a cow elk I killed here in Kentucky in 2005.  Unlined.  Has a pocket sewn to the back on the inside.  Most of the flap is the raw edge as it came from the tannery.

Then I finished up this horn using some ideas I learned at Dixon's and hung it on the bag.

The map shows the Great Valley Road coming from the north and Boon's trail coming from the Yadkin Valley, converging near the Long Island of the Holston and on up what was to become known as the Wilderness Road, thru the Cumberland Gap and into the "Fine Cane Land" of Kentucky.

I think they both look great. I love the raw edge on the flap and also the flaws in the pouch body. Gives it a lot more character as it wears.

The horn is really nice too. That screw tip is not easy to do, and your looks really good. Great job on both.

What size is the pouch and horn?

Thanks for the compliments guys.  That elk gave me a nice piece of leather and many good meals.  For the longest time I couldn't bring myself to cut into it.  Finally made myself some leggings and now this bag.  Still got a lot left.  Elk are big critters.

The body of the bag is 8" deep and a little over 7" wide.  No gusset, the sawtooth edging serves as a welt.  The flap, where it folds is a little over 9" wide, so it overhangs the opening.  The inside pocket is 6" wide x 3" deep.  Strap is about 48" long.  Horn is attached on 11" wangs.

The body of the horn is 12" around the outside curve and the screw tip adds another 3".  The base is cherry, about 2-1/2" diameter, sealed with beeswax.  Spout plug is walnut.  I did all the turnings on my 1929 Sypher lathe.

Very nice bag and horn there KyFlinter!! I would like to get the nerve to make a horn myself. Don't have a clue where to start.

Greg,
First, get a copy of Recreating the 18th Century Powder Horn by Scott and Cathy Sibley.  Second, get a cow horn and jump in.  It's a lot of fun.  Third, when you get stuck, ask questions here.

Ron....You done a nice job on both the pouch and the horn. Love the screw tip and also the scrimshaw. I like the raw edge on the flap and the welt design. Keep up the good work..........Frank
