Heavy barreled gun, cross stick perhaps
« on: June 27, 2020, 06:59:30 PM »
My friend bought several old guns as a lot, he is one of the Bogle clan and knows his guns very well but this one has us stumped as to its age, the gun has no markings of any kind on it as to maker or origin, we have taken it completely apart.

It has a 38" .40 cal barrel, 1 1/16" across the flats and weighs in at 23#, the poured nose cap appears to be lead. Someone welded a screw fixture on the back sight to use a modern adjustable blade, the sight itself is not welded on although it appears that way. I picture of the breech shows a different l kind of rifling, 12 wider lands and narrow grooves.

My guess would be a chunk gun.

The welded on rear sight looks more modern.

The sight isn't welded on, someone after the fact took off the original sight and welded a threaded socket on it for a screw to hold tension on a separate sight blade to make it adjustable for height and windage. They did a terrible welding job.
