Rice Allentown Barrel
« on: June 29, 2020, 05:35:38 PM »

What's the scoop on the Rice Allentown barrel?  Is it based off of an original?  Does anyone know a little history about it?  I've looked at the measurements and it is very similar to other available barrels but a couple inches longer.  Does it do something for a Lehigh that the other similar barrels can't?  The muzzle measurements are the same as the similar barrels.  Anyhow,  those that have used it,  do you like it and why?  Are their any pros or cons?

Mike,
According to Mr Allen Martin, it was brought to Rice from an original Allentown barrel.  (He also claims it was named after him). It makes a really nice slender gun, even in a .50 caliber.
I have one on the Little Lehigh that I posted a while back.

I saw your rifle.  It's a dandy.  Your measurement was for an A weight but Rice doesn't list the A weight in 50 caliber.  They list the 50 as  1" B weight.  Was yours a special order barrel?

Thanks Taylor.  Anyone ever tell you that you're pretty good at making guns?  That's a wonderful rifle.

I use this profile on my rifles and really like the way it feels and looks.  It is my first choice if the customer does not request something different.

Does Rice make an A wt. .45 cal x 42" ?? I'd like one soon for a Lehigh Co. shimmel!

I used one on a Moravian style rifle and really liked it.  I only shot it a couple of times just to make sure everything worked.  It did fine.

I believe the Southern Classic A wt. only comes in .50 caliber.
Colerane makes a .45 cal A wt. but I'd rather spend more for the quality and proven accuracy of the Rice barrels, so I'll get a B wt. Rice.

I imagine he would make you a custom barrel.  Charlie Burton is also a good choice for custom barrels.

I'm sure Jason would build you about any reasonable caliber and barrel profile you want. His Souther Classic 42" A weight states "A weight up to .50 Cal." If he can put a .50 cal. hole in it a .45 should be no problem. He can also vary the twist if you so desire. Charlie Burton can also build  about any barrel you want. So can Ed Rayl and Bobby Hoyt. Lots of options.

Someone on the forum here built a rifle a couple years ago with a 40 cal. Southern Classic barrel.
It was frogwalking that built it. I found the thread, but he used a photobucket pic and it's gone.

Give me the URL and I will see if I can get it back.

Yup, I was on Rice's sight yesterday and I missed the "up to" .50 cal. part. I still think I will use a B wt. In my vast experience a lighter barrel, while easy to carry is harder to hold steady on target (for me anyway) and they don't have enough weight to absorb the recoil which becomes annoying.
