Toe plate patch box
« on: June 30, 2020, 04:37:03 AM »
I am planning to make a toe plate patch box like the one on the Bean three patch box rifle. Can someone provide me with the width and length of the complete box and hinge? Also is the stock under the plate drilled to accept jags and etc. or is it channeled out completely?
The toe on that rifle must be pretty wide. I've looked in several books but they don't show much of the toe area. I have also searched through the archives here and found some information but not enough of what I need  Some pictures would be nice also. I would like to thank everyone in advance for any and all help.

Ryan at Muzzlelaoder Builders Supply, has several styles, he might be able to give you a original size
only flintlocks remain interesting..

Here’s the one I built not too long ago.  I can measure it if it’s what’s you’re looking for.

Elk Killer, thanks for the info. I looked at their web site and found the blank ones and they look well made. If I don't find what I am looking I will give him a call.

Mike you did a great job on that rifle and I have looked at it several times. I don't mean to be a bother but if you could post the dimensions for me, I would be grateful.

Here’s some pictures.  I made the hinged box.  If you need any more,  let me know.   I apologize for the quality.  I’m in the middle of a flooring project and had to be quick.

I made one for a rifle a couple years ago and matched the width up with the toe of the butt plate I made for the project.  I made the inside cavity to hold a ball puller, breech scraper, and a cleaning jag.  I made the box a couple times before I got the hinge to look like I wanted.  To date, I have made two rifles with this type of toe plate box.  I like it a bunch when I have it finished and the spring /latch assembly finished and installed.  If I can find a photo I will attach it to this note.

Mike, thanks for the pictures. They help me alot. You shouldn't have stopped work to send pictures. Thank you.

Roger I would love to see pictures of your rifles. What was the width of the toe on your rifle when you installed the toe plate patch box?
Thanks

Doug,
I don't have the measurement of the toe of the rifle, but I made another butt plate at the same time and it measures .630 across the bottom of the toe.  I have attached a few photo's of the last box I put on a rifle.  A bit of work, but really worth the effort.  Hope this will be of help.

Roger, even just showing that patchbox, that is some fine looking work and finishing.  Is this the one you made a year ago for yourself?   God Bless,   Marc

Marc,
This one was for a customer.  I made it for him while he was deployed.  The one made before this one with the toe plate box also had a double lid patch box on the butt similar to an original I looked at when at a KRA show.  I ended up letting that rifle go a while after I got it built.  Another one I should have kept!!

Roger I really appreciate you posting the pictures of your beautiful rifle along with the dimension of the toe. I actually found a picture of the Bean patch box and it looks to be pretty wide, maybe even .750 wide. You did a great job on yours. I have some of the parts made for the rifle I have started. Finished the trigger guard today. The patch boxes are next. I've been waiting on a lock from Chambers for way to long. Oh well, gave me time to make some parts. Again thanks.

Double Lid Patch Box
« Reply #11 on: July 21, 2020, 06:51:10 AM »
Doug,
I have attached a photo of the first double lid patch box I made that was inspired by the Bean rifle.  I copied the hinge design from an orignal TN rifle I own with a single lid and is different than used by Bean.  This rifle did not have the toe plate box.  Good luck with your build.
