58 with a 15/16 barrel

I have this rifle 58 cal.with a 15/16 barrel was wondering where I should start load development also was wondering if I used 70 gr of fffg and a 570 ball if that would be too much for the rifle considering the 15/16 barrel diameter the rifle is an Italian Hawken type rifle.

Your wall thickness is around .170 which is plenty. I wouldn't worry about it, start at 70 and go to where you need to go.

I agree with the use of 2F. At whatever you end up with in an accurate load, the pressure generated will be less than produced with 3F.

that's going to make for a light rifle. I use 75gr of 3f with a .575 rb for a target load in my 58 green Mtn barrel. Only about 1300 fps. Use 120 gr 2f with .565 rb for hunting. 1800 fps. both loads shoot great. I use 2f with the hunting load because 3f burns the patches.

I shoot 55gr 2F with my 58 for target.  For deer hunting I bump it up to 80 gr 2F.

I've always started off with a 2F charge in the neighborhood of the caliber....50 grains for a .50, 60 grains for a .58 and so on.  Don't have much of a problem with patch/ball size, fouling/cleaning and grouping at both 25 and 50 yards.

There are too many guys here with a lot of experience advising 2F.  Hhhmmm...

My thought is rate of twist in the barrel dictates what shoots well and modern steel will handle more than your shoulder or cheek bone can. That said it does not need to be so heavy a charge that creates a thunderclap, blinding flash, and pumpkin size groups. I used only 60 grains of ffg behind a .58 caliber minnieball for everything and it would shoot clean through a mule deer length wise at 200 yards.

75gr. 2f GOEX with .022" denim patch and a .575" ball resulted in 1,308fps from the 24" bl. Musketoon.  The rifle had a 5-groove bl. with 48" rate of twist.
It shot better and put 5 into 3" at 100meters off the bags with 85gr. GOEX 2F. I did not chronograph that load, but it was with a water based lube. If used
for hunting with an Neetsoof oil or bear/mink grease lube, I would have expected the same accuracy with 90 to 95gr. 2F GOEX. I am sure that would be a decent
load for most NA big game and would be safe in that bl.  I would not shoot slugs in it.

I would want to know who made the barrel and from WHAT kind of steel.
Just because it's an import doesn't mean it's a good barrel.
