Cat Bag
« on: July 01, 2020, 02:50:49 AM »
After several months of dealing with some health issues, I am finally able to get back in the groove. This combo is heading to a customer in Texas who wanted a bag, horn and knife set-up represented in a painting of Stephen F. Austin, the "Father of Texas". The customer researched the original painting and found it to be made from a woodcut done in 1824. Note the antler handled knife sheathed on the bag strap. In lieu of a jaguar, the customer sent me one of his bobcat hides to construct this double bag. The horn was made by Billy Griner and the knife was made by Chad Matthews. Since the customer wears his bag on the left,  I reversed the painting : )

That is an outstanding exhibition of craftsmanship and history. Kudos to all four artists, including the original painter.

I think it is fantastic James.  Working with unusual hide like that must really focus the mind.  Even with a working pattern, I'd be scared I'd mess up and irreplaceable hide.

The look is super, and all of that detailed edge work is impressive.  You go from strength to strength.

The bag is also a great reminder that not all bags were simple Appalachian pouches.  Folks with fine guns had fine bags to match.  With all of the fine guns sold today, I am surprised that there is not more demand for high-end detailed bags.

Another super one brother!   God Bless,   Marc

Those belly spots really make it stand out to the eye. Very fine craftsmanship by all parties, I am a bit envious.

My previous favorite bag of yours was the pleated bag that I've seen pictured with a pistol. If this isn't my new favorite, it is definitely a co-favorite. Beautiful work.

Here is one source for a tanned bobcat hide:
