Great start to Independence Day.

Had a couple of friends over this morning and we cast up a Dutch D guard for an upcoming New England fowler project.  Had to make my own as this wil be a boys size fowler.  I am using a 33" long oct/rd .40 smooth bore barrel from Charlie Burton inlet into a piece of cherry.  The buttplate was swaged from 1/16" sheet brass in the Dutch style as well.  Next up is the side plate.  Don't know if I will get ambitious and cast it as well or just cut it out of sheet brass.  Kind of leaning towards casting it.

Nice work. Aspiring to casting brass.
I do a fair bit of aluminum casting, managed to make Aluminum bronze once. That stuff won`t even respond to a file.
I kind of envy the guys who can cast brass, something i am planning on trying eventually.
 It will come i guess.

Very nice. What alloy of brass and about how much do you suppose was in the crucible?

You could have sent those patterns over to me and saved alot of work. Gluten for punishment....

Say, any of you boys smithies? Or, if not smithies per se, were you otherwise trained in the metallurgic arts before straitened circumstances forced you into a life of aimless wanderin'?

I am using 70/30 brass nuggets.  I us an A2 graphit/clay crucible.  It will hold 5 1/2 lbs of brass.  I normally fill the crucible about half full and after the pour I end up filling a couple of ingot cavities in a Lyman ingot mold with the excess brass.  It takes more brass to fill the spru and runners than the actual triggerguard or buttplate.

Casting your own butt plates or trigger guards IS a lot of work, especially if you make the patterns. When you break the mold on a good pour, the gratification is worth the work.
