Bag #31 - Smoothbore Pouch with Volume
« on: July 15, 2020, 07:17:57 PM »
Hello All,

I just finished a bag that I believe would be appropriate for the gentleman with a smoothbore piece for shooting fowl.  This one has a broad gusset adding volume for shot, wadding, a flat horn, etc.  It is 8-1/2" wide, 7-1/2" tall and 2-1/2" deep.

It is 3 ounce bridle leather fully lined in suede cowhide.  It is welted with pinked goatskin, and has a goatskin rolled edge where you hand enters.  Thank you for the goatskin Bob.  The flap is unlined to facilitate the button closure.  It carries two buckles of forged iron.  Inside pocket in top rear.  The tapered flap allows easy opening considering the gusset-mounted straps and buckles.

I hope y'all enjoy.  God Bless,   Marc

I agree with Mark Elliott, something different to think about and admire the design and execution.  Size seems right, not too large, not too small.  Good job Marc.

Thats an interesting design Mark. Very clean work. It brings to mind some cartridge bags I've seen.

I made a bag with a 3" gusset for a fellow once. Had me put the strap ends on the back of the bag. After about 2 years of struggling to keep it from dumping everything out, he asked me how I could fix it. So I moved the straps to the gusset and told him he carried waaay too much stuff.

That's an interesting bag, Mark.  Can u post a pic of the side showing your strap attachment to the the gusset?

The narrow flap in relation to the total bag width always seemed strange to me yet appealing. You'd think debris would work it's way in but maybe not.  While visiting Dave Byrd a few years ago, he showed me a bag that came with a southern rifle that had the same type of narrow flap in relation to the body width.  Very neat looking.  Good job!

Hi Scott,

I was inspired to do this from an image of an older Gary Birch bag a friend put me on to.  I really liked the bag after looking at it a bit, but thought my flap attachment would be a "better mousetrap".  Well, probably not. It's not my favorite bag design for the very reason of leaving two small spots for debris to enter.  If you make the flap full width, it'll catch on the straps when loaded. It was fun to do as something different though.

Gary Birch's bag below.....much nicer than mine.

My strap attachment.  Nothing you'd need a brain surgeon to sew.   :-)

Top view of my bag...…

An image from Jim Webb's incredible book on bags and pouches. A similar idea, but not exactly.

I agree that a fat gusset bag with rear attachment would be a handful to manage.  This one rides in nice and tight and balanced.

God Bless,    Marc

Marc,

Someone brought an original bag to Boonesborough a couple years ago that had the straps attached to the side.  I’m no expert,  but two small buckles to pull the gap closed is how some of the german bags seemed to handled the issue.  You can see them on the picture.

These bags show masterful management of different materials and techniques.

When the shoulder straps come off the side of the bag and are part of the gusset there always seems to be a gap in the cover....possible because the weight and hang of the bag once filled sort of contorts the leather.  Making the flap wider at the throat  always seemed to show crimping of the widened flap because of the same reason.

Now that you coyotes have inspired me with   your pics, I want to again make a gusseted bag and maybe fasten the strap to the gusset just below the throat of the bag.  I'd like to also taper the gusset toward the back of the bag from the bottom  to the throat.

If you have any pics of something like this, please post.

Thanks
Capgun

I'm wondering if a potential solution is just simply adding a 'spacer' of sort, like a thicker piece of leather, attached to the gusset before adding the strap.  Think ranger belt style.   Wouldn't that provide the added space to allow a full width of a flap?  Wouldn't the 'added spacer' also give the gusset (along with the attached strap) the added strength to prevent crimping, etc?
It's early in the day and need some more coffee so forgive my simple mind not quite awake yet.
