While at the Alabama Kentucky rifle show last January I happened to notice an unfinished rifle on the table at Harrison Gun stocks. Nathan told me that it was one that Freddie had been working on before falling ill and eventually passing on. I looked at it several times during the weekend and to my surprise, no one bought it. Because I really needed another flintlock I decided to pay the man for it and take it home to Stoner Creek. I hadn’t had it back on my table for 5 minutes and I was approached by a fellow ALR member and all around good guy from Georgia who inquired about my intentions with the rifle and it’s eventual new owner. I told him that I had no immediate plans other than to complete the gun to the very best of my abilities or resources. He ( let’s call him Ron) said that if I ever sell it that he would like first refusal!
For this job to live up to Freddie Harrison standards I decided to call in a few friends on the project.
Keith Vance completed and finished cleanup of the relief carving.
Randall Cantrall stained and finished the stock.
Gary Tucker did the engraving.
I finished all the metal parts.
If you have been in this sport long enough, you will probably know that Freddie was the man when it came to supplying world class curly maple gunstocks but few knew that he was a very accomplished gun maker too. With that thought in mind it was really important to help get his last one right.
Enjoy!!
Oh by the way, I didn’t forget the “little bird” that Freddie engraved on his guns either!!
