fellers I made a mistake! I rechecked it, that just didn't seem right to me. it turns just a little less than 1/2 turn in 31in.

It is most likely a 1 in 66 twist.

Then I would measure 1/4 turn.  And measure it again and again until the measurement was repeatable.  This will reduce the vagueness/error.  Multiply that measurement by 4 to get your rate.  Recommend a tape-flag for ease of seeing 90-degrees or 1/4 turn.

Measure 1/4 turn from the breech a few times, then measure 1/4 turn nearest the muzzle a few times.  If it gets faster--even just a tiny bit--you've got GAIN!

Daryl alluded to my .62 cal Hawken.  My best accuracy load so far is 127 gr. GOEX FFg, .022" cotton denim patch, neatsfoot oil lube, and a .613" ball cast from a Lyman .610 mould.
