Latest Pouch
« on: July 30, 2020, 03:25:55 PM »
Moving foward on my goal of creating a version of every bag in Jim Webbs book on shooting pouches in  Southern Appalachia.as you can see I altered the design some, i used light weight cowhide instead of buckskin, but I stitched it as Jim described in his book.  IN the book he noted this would be a difficult bag to do and he was right.  The stitched around the center panel is through five thicknesses of leather and that is what creates the little pocket Andre the Giant is in.  I learned a couple of tricks along the way so if any of you are going to give this bag a try let me know and I will fill you in.

I always wanted to make that bag, but I could never quite figure it out.   You did a very nice job.   I recognized it right away.   I have got a side of 2oz cowhide that I might use to give it a shot.   I would appreciate any tips you have.

The only suggestion that I wish I had figured out before I started, that would have helped a lot.  Draw out your pattern the way Jim Webb Shows it.  But then add maybe an 1/8 of an inch or more to the seam lines.  This will make stitching it easier.  Also, I stitched the sides of the center panel first, then worked my way up from the bottom.  The bottom of the center panel was the hardest part to stitch.  I really needed an extra hand, but did not have one.  I did not learn any new cuss words, but learned new ways to string them together.

Another sweet bag, Cory Joe...love all the decorative stitching!  If I decide to try one, I think I’ll go with a nice piece of calfskin, or maybe goat...might be a little easier to work all those angled seams.
