Kibler Southern Mountain Rifle Done----Pic's
« on: August 03, 2020, 01:34:47 AM »
Attached are pic's of completed smr in walnut. It has three additions: patch box, toe plate and Bison horn muzzle caplet. I used bone black with Truoil to get some age on the stock and brass black on metal parts. To me it looks quite good but photos could be better. The gun is ready for the range!!

The finish I used was Truoil with bone black where the gun is gripped. The wood is quite opened grained but I did not use a sealer. The grain was not filled with six coats of Truoil but the opened grain made the application of bone black easier and I like the less than perfect finish on what is a 'field' gun.

Hi there,
Great rifle, mighty fine effort. What did you use for the metal finish? Just curious.

Take care,
Steven

The rifle caliber is 40 cal. The metal finish is full strength brass black taken back with 0000 steel wool. Jim Kibler sells the brass black solution for shipment to cousa. I got mine from a supplier in Toronto called Sculpture Supply Canada.

With smr done, getting ready for the range soon. I will start with .389 cast balls and .022 inch denim. I washed my .018 pillow ticking and it turned into a real mess and is totally unusable.......I had to laugh it turned into a such a birds nest that is impossible to untangle.(into the garbage with it)

I will soon receive a bag and horn from Bill Smith and off to the the range ..................really!!! I need to get more active so I am "Segwaying" away from building and pushing myself to get to the range and out to the farm.

Will post targets and hope to participate in the postal shoot soon.

I do love those Kibler SMR.  I'm still wanting one in .45.  Yours is great.

If you want to see the flaws in your work just post pictures !!!  The camera sees ALL!! I will attend to the flaws AFTER shooting the rifle for a while.

That's unfortunate, but will happen is the material is cut or ripped into strips first.
Good job on the rifle. Interesting forend cap.
This is another treatment for the forend.

The first thought on seeing your rifle was, "Now that's a utilitarian rifle!"

Beautiful job.
