I have a 40 cal. Kibler SMR on order and I am having a hard time finding a range rod long enough for the 46" barrel. I'm open to suggestions on the type of material though, I would prefer something other than wood. Is there any direction you guys could point me? Thanks again for your help.

My brass range rod is 43.5" (from Tip Curtis years ago) and with a tow worm is a touch over 46" long. So it would work.

You can use or make any length of extension to make up the few inches needed. Easiest done on a lathe but can be done with hand-tools too. Or any tow-worm maker could make you a "extended" tow worm I'm sure.

Or you can make up a proper wiping stick. Bob just made some videos of his making a wiping stick. Bob uses store-bought materials here, but one can improvise if he has some good straight-grained wood of appropriate lengths, and a scrap pile.

But if you're not a maker of things: get one ready made certainly:

Track of the Wolf makes a great range rod. It is what I use on my .40 caliber Kibler SMR. With the cleaning jag attached it works fine and is just long enough for loading, cleaning or pulling a ball.
Here is a photo of the one they sell next to the flexible range rod I used prior to getting the solid one. If you like the flex type this will work on your rifle for both loading and cleaning you just need to buy a cleaning jag in your caliber with 10-32 threads. It is flexible enough to bend until the ends touch but stiff enough to clean, load and pull a ball if needed. It has a deer antler handle that is glued and pinned. $15.00 + whatever the post office charges to ship.

Thanks for the information! I checked Track Of The Wolf and the longest I saw was 44". Is that long enough once I add the jag? I also, looked at the Rice website but I didn't see anything about their rang rods. Am I overlooking something? Thanks again for y'alls help.

NJS: yes it is JUST long enough as it is the one I use on my Kibler SMR. If you would like I will take a picture of it inside the barrel with jag so you can see how much remains. The flexible one has a few inches to spare as it is longer. I will say I do have to remove the brass chamber guide when cleaning but not for loading.

I second what Paul said. The Rice rods are available to 48" and are an excellent product.

Available in other lengths and diameters. Some guys don't like them because they are so flex able. Choke up on the rod, no problem. Great for cleaning too.

The Rice range rods have a large round handle and a delrin muzzle guide.
Absolutely straight and finely finished.

At the range I do most of my reloading with the wood, underbarrel rod; If a load can't be safely seated with it then the load is useless for me. All cleaning is normally done with a range rod (I have 3 or 4). I recall that long ago I had a flintlock with a longer barrel than I was use to. My normal cleaning rods were too short for that length. I came across a rod for a machine gun (Browning, I think) that was just the right length to work. But only the nice ss rods are in use now, primarily for cleaning, not reloading. One was bought from "somewhere?" and the other was a gift. Good ones seem, to me, easy to find.

I needed a long rod for cleaning my Sharps, so I bought a 60" piece of 5/16" stainless from a local shop.
I cut it to about 55", put on a handle on one end and drilled and tapped the other for 10/32 theaded jags.
It works just fine in my 44" bl.'s .50.

I purchased a couple from Muzzleloader Builders Supply many years ago. They work fine with my 46 in barrelled fowling guns.
