I see that you used the much besmirched Bivins butt plate. Frankly I like that butt plate very much and used it in my own Haines interpretation.

Do you have any tips or tricks on how to make this butt plate look good? I just picked up my second one at Dixon’s last week cuz I fudged up the first one.

I think they look good just as they are. The tricky thing is getting everything laid out properly on the stock.  If it is not aligned properly with the centerline or the plane of the comb, it will show up like a bad dog.

Looks outstanding.....and I have a question.....why is that particular butt plate "besmirched"?  Personally, I like it.

I like it too. I have read quite a few posts here complaining that it was a John Bivins invention, and that Haines never used anything like it.

There is nothing even remotely similar depicted in any books on old rifles.
That said, nobody today is building old rifles.

Great job on your build, it is going to be a lovely rifle.

I like the butt plate even though Haines may not have used it, it has become known for contemporary builders as a Haines butt plate. The biggest problem that I have with this casting is that the angle between the heel and the toe is to close and needs to be opened up a bit. The first thing I do to these anneal and open up the angle. The next thing is it is a thick and heavy casting, I remove as much of the thickness as possible. This helps trim this butt plate up into a really nice piece.
