Snuff Box Prototype
« on: August 09, 2020, 08:51:26 PM »
This is a work in-progress, the idea came from this post:

 https://americanlongrifles.org/forum/index.php?topic=61360.0

Not a copy but a take-off. I saw the note on the size after I had already started so this one is about 3 X 1 1/4". The body is horn top and bottom Maple. The pivot pin in the center goes through the actual top and the top plate which is attached to the body with three Iron pins. The two are held together with an iron cross pin through the pivot pin, it is bent around the wooden pin to hold it. See Pic. After the pin was anchored the bottom goes on held by 4 wooden pegs.
Not quite finished, I have three more bodies made and will do some things different on them.

Just beautiful.

Years ago I snuffed. It’ll make you sneeze sometimes and burns a little, and gives a strong head rush. Nowadays I don’t know even where to buy it.

Nice Tim,...I like all of the storage type horns. Interesting and utilitarian. Some day I'd like to do one of the tender horns. Keep us posted.

I just thought, one of these would serve amply as a container for percussion caps.

Really nice work Ron. I like your top and lid. I need to get my lid thinner, yours looks like it will be much easier to get into. I've got a revised edition on the lathe this morning, we'll see how it comes out. Are the top, lid and bottom all horn? The art work fits it well.

Yes,its all horn. The lid is two pieces, rotating top and stationary bottom. I chimed the bottom of the box into the body. The two piece lid assembly is pinned. Thought is would be light weight if all horn. Something to play with. Saw that someone said you could use as cap box,Marc suggested patch box. Take care

I am not familiar with "Chimed", is that where a groove is cut and a piece is pressed into it, like the bottom of a cup?
Do you know if there is a tutorial some place on it?

Love the 'chimed' idea Ron.   And Tim, excellent version as well.  Keep the ideas flowing gentlemen.
