Not your typical HC rifle

I just finished this rifle for a guy in my club and will deliver it to him tonight at our monthly meeting.  It's an odd one for sure but it is growing on me.
He wanted a SMR but in .58 and I couldn't with good conscious, do that so I talked him into a virginia buttplate and a wider butt to soak up the recoil.  Jim Parker recommended the Jacob Young gaurd to me which i think looks really good with the butt plate.
The owner wanted no tailpipe or muzzle cap and wanted the jag on the rod and sticking past the end of the barrel.  Also, he wanted a peep sight and an ungodly looking front sight which he bought and i had it put on.
The wood is from a tree that was cut down from our club and until now, I was the only one who built a gun for myself from one of the 17 planks.  He wanted it stained but I talked him into leaving natural.  Also has a bucks county toeplate and a Robert Hughes sideplate (that I made) so as you can see, we are all over the place.
This thing shoots phenomenal with a colerain 36" tapered barrel and a Davis lock (which he also wanted on the gun).  It will be a pure deer killer!

That's my kind of rifle!!!  A pure, big game killing machine.  No fancy carving or inlays, just pure functionality.  Good job!!

There is a tenn mountain rifle at the Museum of the Fur Trade in Chadron, NE. that is 58 cal. A great place to visit.

I'm heading out to Wyoming in early October for elk.  I may have to plan a trip to the fur trade museum coming back since we will be coming through Nebraska.  I'd like to see that Tennessee in there.

And of all things, Scott, he also wanted that lock mounted on the wrong side, and cast on rather than cast off!  The very nerve of him!

Really, Scott, it is a very nice rifle, and beautifully executed.  You can both be proud of that one.

What is the finish?  It has a lovely warm, lively color.

Yea, we are both lefties as a matter of fact so I think it's on the right side😁.  Anyway, thanks for the compliment and the finish is no stain.  Two coats of permalyn sealer.  Knocked it back with steel wool and then rubbed 4 coats of wakon bay oil finish on.  I let it dry in the sun between each coat of wakon and it set up quickly.  Haven't used the stuff in years and figured I'd give it another try.  I'm always looking to try different things.  It does have a nice color, I agree.

 The only thing I see on this rifle that is clearly SMR is the side plate. The rest of it looks like a colonial Jaeger.

I can see what u mean.  It really isn't a SMR.  I just pacified him using southern furniture like the butt plate and trigger gaurd.  In fact, I'm not sure what part of Tennessee Jacob Young was from but I do like his gaurd style.

Should make a nice hunting rifle.  I don't think game animals care whether the rifle is historically accurate or not. The customer has what he wanted a left hand hunting rifle. Good job.

It kinda favors a early Virginia style. Many early gunsmiths in that area learned the trade in Lancaster, York and other parts of Pennsylvania.

The workmanship on this rifle is outstanding!  I love that wood, just as it is.  I think a clear finish with no stain was the right decision.  That trigger guard was a good choice for this rifle, too.  I don't think it would have looked right with one of the "Bean" style guards.
