Thanks for the update Jim and I'll be picking one up too. Speaking of English Fowlers, and I know your system isn't conducive to more nichey stuff, but it's a shame it's so hard to get a proper English Fowling Piece standing breech with the high sighting groove humps....

Yeah, I would love to do a super high end fowling piece, but for a number of reasons I think a nice high end trade gun would be a better choice.  I like the really good English fowling pieces so much, though I probably will do one someday.

Jim will you ever consider making one of your rifles with shorter barrels? I would love one of your guns but they are so long it is next to impossible to transport them. and I just don't like them so long, not handy at all,,,,,,,,,,,

Jim, suggest putting a front sling swivel on the Trade Gun. Adding the rear swivel is an easy task for the builder. Or you could make sling swivels an option. I suspect many Indians or militiamen would have had slings on their guns

Good choice on that trading grade fowling piece Jim. This Wilson piece is an example of what an average fowling gun looked like sitting in the various mercantile stores around Virginia Colony.

Right on, Bob.  It would be a time saver for the builder to be able to get it jug choked already rather than sending it off to someone like Hoyt or Caywood to get it done.

I was flipping through my copy of Of Sorts for Provinicals the other day and admiring the lines of that Wilson gun.  Its almost a perfect blend between the simple and the elegant.  It would be awesome if the next kit is in that style.

The gun in Of Sorts for Provincials has a bore of .65  or close to a 16 gauge.  It would be awesome if the new offering was the same rather than the usual .20 bore !

Yeah, we'll be offering something shorter in time.  Probably a Hawken or plains style rifle.  Thanks so much for the interest.

I think I'd like to use 4140 or 4150 for the barrel as the wall thickness will need to be pretty thin to be historically accurate.  The round section will be formed by turning so I don't think the lugs wil be integral to the barrel.  I'll probably figure out a process to solder them on.

Hi Jim:

Is there a risk of overheating 4140 during lug soldering and reducing the strength locally  by an unskilled workman? I should think that this depends on what heat treatment it has received.  I worked in the pressure vessel industry for many years as a mechanical engineer and used 4140 (ASME 193-B7) bolting for service to 600 deg F. This has a room temperature yield of 100 ksi with good ductility which has been achieved by quench and temper heat treatment. Not sure how sensitive it may be to any overheating with commensurate reduction of strength. Comments appreciated. Thanks
