Unknown maker / patchbox?
« on: August 29, 2020, 06:52:38 PM »
I had this posted under another heading that may not have invited lookers as well I intended.  I have got some valuable responses but maybe if a few more of you folks looked at this I might get it ID'd?
Here os a photo of the patch box of this rifle.  Saw some similar, but non real close.
Thanks

Nice piece! Very nice patch box. I can't say who made it but sometimes the counter plate and rear sight  can give you a clue to the region of build.

This may be a southern rifle, based on: 1) the wavy termination of the forestock molding at the rear pipe, 2) what appears to be two flats [instead of 3] filed on the outside of the guard's bow and extensions, 3) patchbox finial symmetrical on both sides of central axis, 4) simple double line forestock and lower butt molding. We need to see better pictures of details on the rifle, such as guard, side plate, rear ramrod pipe area, to get a better idea. But from what I can see, NC or SC aren't out of the question.
