Why scalding hot water? It cleans no better than lukewarm, but risks flash rusting.  I don’t see the point.

Marc, all I can say is that goes back to the writings of the early and mid 1970's, by people who knew no better.  Interesting
it is being perpetuated today, when we do know better.  Like the bore butter concoctions, perhaps it does build up inside the
bore, contrary to their statements and the scalding-hot water is needed to melt it to remove it.
I use cold water straight from the tap - works just as H&H (long time gun makers of England) stated it would.  They also stated
that VERY hot water will have a caking effect on BP deposits (breech face) instead of dissolving those deposits like cold water does.
Does cold water actually dissolve powder fouling off the breech face? - dang right it does.

Since I go back that far I can comment on the scalding hot water.  The funny truth is they thought the hot water would eliminate the risk of that nasty water lingering in your bore or breech and causing rust.  Really

I always thought the hot water was likely to scald my fingers and by the time I swabbed the water out and ran some CLP wipes through it there was no water worry.
kind regards, heinz

Has anyone tried WD40 specialist corrosion inhibitor. It is suppose to be better than regular WD40. Can't say I have really had any problems with the original.

I have some. It works ok but I wouldn't say that it's the be-all end-all... If my guns sit for a while I will still get patches with a very light rust stain from time to time. Of course we can run some pretty high humidity here for a good part of the year... Especially this year.

I use a blast of WD 40 after cleaning, then wipe it out of the bore, with a final patch of bear oil.
I think that if you have to worry about rust prevention after taking some simple precautions, you're not shooting enough  ;D

That was a great article on rust preventives. Surprising how poorly some of the stuff we've all used for years did in the tests. I bought a can of WD Specialist today when I saw it on the shelf in a feed store. Have Frog lube so I'm set I guess.
