J.P. Beck tang

Did Beck have a signature tang finial or was his tangs just squared off. Hard to find top views of rifles showing the tang area.

On the KRA XV disk, there are nine J P Beck rifles. On one rifle the tang is rectangular. Another rifle is rounded off like a half circle. Another rifle has no picture of the tang. There are six rifles which have the tang like the one Taylor built and shows above. However the little fingernail is probably about 3/8 inch longer and skinnier than what Taylor did. Personally, it's the stock profile that say's Beck to me. Hope this info helps.

Shaped tang is! I used a circle and ellipse template to lay out the patter on a piece of sheet brass to use as a pattern then transferred the outline to the tang. A bit of file work and the barrelis readyto send along with the blank to Dave Rase.

Richard, Gunsmiths of Lancaster County show 6 JP Beck guns including the tang view. They are all thumb nails, pg. 69-74. Also to file/shape your tang if you have any cut off barrel pieces tap it to accept your thread  of the breech plug. Gives you something to clamp in the vice and then you won't mark up your breech plug clamping it in the vice.  Steve

David can speak for himself, but I don't think you need to install the tang and sent it along with the barrel.  All he needs is the barrel without the tang.  If fact, I think that tang is just something that he has to deal with, and is an item that can easily be lost in shipping etc.
Very uniform file work.  I like the square corner at the lug too.  Your rear lock bolt will almost certainly be completely within the lug, it being so deep.

Thanks for the kind words. Yesterday I sent Mr. Rase a pm and he informed me he does not inlet the tang as you said. The tang and barrel was made by Don Getz back in the early ‘80s. It is 60cal.

Yes, he is quite a filer. his filing on the inside that won't be seen is better than my outside where the whole world sees it.

Your welcome, Flats. I am always on the lookout for photos of originals as well as well made contemporaries. I store them on a big old hard drive to refer to later.
