Decorating a Laubach CNC Lock

I just finished lightly engraving and filing some details on the Frizzen Spring of the first of the Chris Laubach Jaeger locks used in my shop. The texture of the machined steel was exceedingly smooth and consistent.
The two photos with orange background are the Laubach lock. I annealed the frizzen for polishing and engraving. I shaped the frizzen spring a bit to give is just slightly different look.
The last two photos are locks with different borders and frizzen spring details that should be achievable if customization of the Laubach lock is desired.

I have had twelve of these locks to examine. All produced exceedingly large amounts of hot sparks. They are a pleasure to work with.

Looking good Ron!  I can easily believe that machined stock would engrave much smoother and more consistent than cast parts.

Nice, would like to see more.  I haven’t had the chance to use one of Chris’s locks, they look great to begin with, but really good with embellishments like you have applied

I have a small heat treating oven. I brought the oven to 1500 F, wrapped the Frizzen in Stainless Steel Foil, place the wrapped Frizzen in the oven, shut off the oven and let cool overnight. Chris furnished me with the hardening instructions. Assuming he doesn't mind me sharing those, I will add them to the post.

This is the method for heat treating the frizzen. To heat treat the frizzen . Heat to 1650 hold for 20 minutes to 30 minutes and quench upside down in water that has been brought to 125° prior to quenching. You can add salt to the water that will help. But once the frizzen  has been hardened it must be drawn at 375° for roughly an hour and a half

Great work, Ron!  Wondering why the lock you sent me doesn't look quite like the one pictured...  Although it does spark quite well.

Guess I better get to work on it!
