It is a @!*% shame no doubt.
I would try real hard to learn to live with it but if it gets the better of you try either spakfilla with sparkles to fill in the carving or Putrid pink spray paint to cover the woodgrain.
Either way most people won't notice how the carving is overshadowed by the wood.

It will just be your little secret.

I'm a "glass half full" kinda guy, I say TREASURE IT! You got the best of both. I like incise carving on a piece like that, instead of relief.

Seriously, that is why some builders who carve intricately will use a planer piece of wood. The curl and carving can conflict visually. I recall one burl maple gun that had contrasty finish and fancy carving. It did not work to my eye.

What a nice piece of wood. From what I can see from the photos, would heavier incised carving help? The cuts almost look lighter than your engraving.

Mike sometimes that happens. You can color the cuts with black and it will help a bit. Widening will help some also but nothing will make it pop like it would on a plainer piece of wood.

That may be the end result. I’m not having a good experience with tannic acid.

Mike excellent piece of Maple.? Your artistry is amazing. But if I would have a piece of wood like that. I probably ( like I can carve..lol ) Would have backed off on the amount of art work an let the two blend together.....But what do I know..Oldtravler

Kidding aside, I’ve never used any tannic acid. I start with nitric acid and typically add a little color with Laurel Mountain Forge nut brown, cherry or walnut, depending on the piece of wood .

The tannic acid took a lot of rubbing back and was blotchy. Once I got it where I was happy, the ferric nitrate seems to be soothing things out well.

That color is going to be fine. The stripe does make the carving disappear a bit, but it makes your wire work stand out.
