I have seven traditional blackpowder rifles, Hawken style....percussion and flintlock...58, 54, and 50 caliber and they all shoot excellent with 100 grains KIK 2F powder. Kinda makes it simple!

That's along the same trend that Taylor and I have found that a ball .005" under bore diameter along with a .020" to .022"(10oz) patch, works in all calibres.
Many guns will do just about as well, with a ball .010" under bore size & with the same patches. Deeper, round bottomed rifling usually requires thicker patching
especially with the smaller ball.
It is nice to find "trends" like this as it makes loading starting points in load development very easy as they are 'normal'.

The majority of molds in my shop are for ball .010" under bore dia. But for my .45 I also have a mold that's .005" under bore dia. In testing them side by side, both accuracy and velocity were virtually identical as was seating pressure for the prb. Two barrels are radius groove rifling and they do get a thick patch. But I still use the same patch for the .45 and others, with a couple of exceptions.

Daryl,
I totally agree. Every new barrel, Rice, Getz, FCI will shoot well with .050” undersized ball, and .020” patches. Then it’s just figure powder charge.
Now, if I could only fix my eyesight.

Dane- I think you meant .005" under.

Ok, put my decimal in the wrong place. Sometimes I need adult supervision.

I think that goes for the rest of us, too.
