Pistol Twist Rate
« on: October 21, 2020, 06:03:24 PM »
what you all think is a good rate for a 40. Cal ? 10 inch long.

I think i need a fast twist I will be shooting lower powder charges at paper.

I shoot 26gr of FFF out of my Cap Ball Revolver its a 44.

Green Mountain uses 1:16.  I have one of those 40 cal barrels on a match pistol.  It is stunningly accurate with 20 gr and a patched ball.

Sounds good. I'd say 16" to 18" will work just fine. Slower can work as well, but will need more powder
used to get the vel. up so it'll shoot.

Daryl is right, and you don’t even have to stop at his “slow” twist rates. I cut off a 32 cal. 1 in 48 twist Barrel some years ago, and traded the cut off piece to a guy that wanted to make a cheap pistol out of it. I really never thought about it again until I ran into the guy a few years later at a Rendezvous. He thanked me profusely for selling him the barrel scrap, and said it was the best shooting pistol he ever had. I doubted his judgement on the subject enough to ask if I could shoot it. Son of a gun, that pistol with 35 grains of 3F in it was a tack driver, and would do the job at longer range than my fast twist 45 cal.

That is why I must use 55gr. 3F in my .54 pistol. It's 60" twist dictates the load.
It does have some recoil.

It does have some recoil?  The mushroom shaped cloud of smoke would bother me.   :o

Yes - it certainly would be, Jerry. That is also why I have a fast twist .45 barrel for that pistol with a caplock
replacement for the flint mechanism, which shoots well with 25gr. of powder, for competition at rendezvous.
