Another longrifle built
« on: October 24, 2020, 07:20:17 PM »
I just finished my 6th longrifle build. It a Haines style but it has many other traits. It is a 45 caliber with a 38 inch Colerain barrel. The wood came from Allen Martin and was another beautiful stick from him. I made the Volger eagle, side plate and pick hold from scratch. The lock is a Kibler Ketland. The butt carving is similar to a Martin Shell and other carvings are just something I drew up. The engraving on the lock needs a little clean up and I'm still trying to decide what to put on the tail end of it. Thinking of doing some engraving on butt plate and trigger guard if I come up with something that looks good.

She shoots too! First four shots in a ragged hole at 50 yards. I love that Kibler Ketland lock!! It is the first lock I've fired that I didn't hear the Clack before the bang. Man its fast!!

Thanks for the compliments.

I used CCL Traditional English oil finish from the Double Gun Journal. This is the best finish I've ever used. It takes some time but well worth it. Most of the finish is in the wood and there is very little on the surface.

Great looking gun. You have a good imagination for what could have been built way back when. I admire the builders that can make a copy of an original piece, I would not attempt it. But I think it's far better to come up with your own design much like the original gunsmiths did long ago.   Al
