I just had a beauty come thru the shop.
Walnut stock, engraved brass mounts, 48" Oct to round fowler barrel, missing the lock.
He was wanting to sell it but I am short on funds.

the forestock is missing about 20" broke not cut

That is cool! With that French butt, do you think it is restocked or one of the trade guns the Brits made in the French style? I know they made at least a few that way. Interesting that the forward lock nail almost misses the side plate and there is no hole for in it the side plate that would indicate secondary usage. Not too worried about little things like that I guess, just cranking them out.

I looked pretty close and I think it is the original stock, the faceplate appears to have been broken at the front lock nail some time ago. The Wilson touchmark and British inspection marks at the breech line up with the references I have. As well as the tang carving and engraving. In letting of hardware is tight.

Oh WOW!!!
In James Hanson's Encyclopedia of Trade Goods-Firearms, he shows a gun with what seems, from what i can see, to have very similar hardware. It was owned by a furtrader-silversmith named John Kinzie but was restocked in the era, according to Hanson, so it doesn't have the original "french" style stock.

I sure hope someone here can get it ,if available, and am looking forward to seeing what can be found out about it.

From the picture it looks like the lock unloaded the mainspring, and blew the bottom of the stock out. I had a modern muzzleloader do this, boy will that get your attention.
