A Horn With Scallops

   It is about 12" around the outside curve and 10 tip to tip. The Cherry butt is about 2 1/2", hollowed out a bit and held by 28 iron pins. The two part tip is made up of a collar of antler and a horn tip. the tip is threaded into the collar and the collar is threaded onto the horn but the collar is permanently attached to the horn. The color is AF and Brown Shoe polish.

Neat look. I’ve seen horns, and have one, with a scallop but instead of a wood plug have plush fabric filling the butt. A simple chain allow the horn to be hung on a wall where needles and pins were stored in the fabric plug.

That looks beautiful  I would say it has the looks of a horn of someone with notable status. The scalloping adds a whole new dimension to the horn.

Very neat idea with the scallops.  I like the whole horn.  My only comment, and a very minor one, is that I think the fiddle peg stopper is a little outsized for the proportions of the horn.   God Bless,  Marc

 Ya know what Marc I had never given any thought to the fact that the stopper looks like a "Fiddle Peg". I am not and never have been a fan of using them for stoppers, I think they are a 20thC thing. I will let this one go but will change the shape/design of what I use from now on.

You may well be right on the pegs being 20th century addition to powderhorns, but those pegs were on stringed instruments as far back as the 1500s, so peg use could be plausible.

 Well I didn't like the modified tip so I made another, kind of a variation of the "fiddle peg" more of a tear drop.

I have fiddle pegs in some of my horns. Bought them from Trackofthewolf.com.

I don't know if fiddle pegs were a thing back in the golden age... But they sure do work handy. Mine seems to have just the right amount of "snug" to it. Tight enough to never slip out on its own but placing the peg between my lips and a slight twist and it pops free.

All that aside... Another beautiful horn Tim.
