Meshach Browning's gun
« on: August 26, 2009, 02:14:34 AM »
Not sure if this is the right forum but thought I would get the most knowledgeable responses here.

Did Meshach Browning ever use a 16 bore smooth gun? I am trying to find this out for a friend and  I found a couple online sources that had Forty Years The Life of A Hunter in full text but my dial-up wont let me get in there to search for it.

Thanks
James

JC send me the link. I can look for it. Wouldn't mind reading that book anyway.

Here is the link if you want to download it. 12.9 MB.

James,
I downloaded the book in PDF format and did a search on 16 and also with the word sixteen (assuming they would have used one or the other to describe a 16 bore) but neither was found in the 449 pages of the book.
Sorry,
Dennis

Having read the book, I must say that I do not remember any mention of smoothbores or a 16 gauge--he used rifles.

Someone found the reference and it was not Browning's gun but a Mr. Martin's gun "which carried nearly a one ounce ball” .  I think it may have just been a musket or fusil.

Alot of early references to rifles that shot one ounce balls--including D. Boone's Ticklicker.
