ALR December Christmas postal shoot
« on: December 02, 2020, 04:13:25 AM »
Okay boys, here's something a little different this month, we're gonna build a snowman.

The match is 9 shots with up to 3 entries allowed.
For your target you'll need a regular can (2 9/16" diameter) a piece of 8 1/2x11" paper a quarter and a sharpie.
Trace the can 3 times one on top of each other.
Do your best to trace the quarter to make 2 even eyes in the top circle and 2 buttons in the middle circle.
You'll fire 3 shots at each of the large circles.
Hits in the big circle score 3 points, hits in the eyes or buttons score 5 points.
I'll be using 1/2 ball scoring and this is to be fired at 25 yards offhand. Rifle, smoothbore, or pistol.
Have fun decorating your snowman.
Tie breaker will be the best decorated snowman (as chosen by my 3 year old)
The prize this month will be a hand forged pair of pliers I made. They're a handy thing to keep in your pouch or camp kit.
Match runs until the end of the month.
Have fun, and Merry Christmas.

I've got a silver dollar and a gallon can of beans, hope I can fit the snowman on the paper.   ;)

Well even a blind squirrel finds an acorn once in a while.
Unlike last weeks elk trip to eastern Oregon (see my posts under "post a pic of what you're up to" and "Lets see your trail cam pictures" in The Over the Back Fence header) today here on the west side it was 54 degrees, bright sunny day with no wind so I loaded up and went to the range. These are not great scores but for an old man with shaky hands and bad eyes I was quite happy with my scores.
I shot all 3 targets using my Don Bruton .32 cal. Mathew Gillespie "tribute rifle". I used .310 round balls, 35 grains of Goex 3F .018 pillow ticking that was greased with T.O.T.W. Mink oil/grease.
I scored target #1 a 31, target #2 a 33, and target #3 a 20 but happily defer to the Judge for final tally. These scores will not win but its the best an old man can do!
For the record the red circle on the bottom "snowball" was for sighting only any hits inside of it were counted as 3 points not 5.
Merry Christmas to all my ALR friends!

Good shooting there Mike. Heck of a group on the bottom circle of that top target.  Looks like a score of 33 for your best target.

Still no ink for the printer but Sharpie, paper, soup can, and quarter I have.

Now it just needs to stop raining.

Only way I could win would be 3 rounds #6 shot at each circle  ;)

Mike:  I'm curious how you added up your score.  A perfect target possible high score is 33, according to Justin's rules?  Am I missing something?

Yeah. I only put buttons on the middle section. The bottom one is just a blank circle.

I just made up a few targets using a compass. I'll need to darken the lines of pencil, I'd guess.
Hopefully it won't be so windy tomorrow.

I came up with a Campbell's can so all set!  Don't know why the pin/string or compass solutions didn't dawn on me?  Duh!

We don't buy much processed food, so don't have a soup can, but I found a glass in the cupboard that is 2 1/2" diameter...close enough.  And I used a Canadian quarter, for the silver content.  It's warm here right now, so I'm anxious to get out.

Well, I'm home, rifle's clean and one target to post. However, seems a problem with too many holes.
So - no score. (or 9/28/6 = 43/36posible) Oh well, I do think I'll use the big gun next time.
I also forgot a priming horn so I tried GOEX 3F, found the Old Enysford I also had (horn) was better than GOEX for prime,
even though it appears closer to GOEX 2F in granulation size. So- learned something else (other than I shoot this rifle poorly).

I have a cow elk hunt starting on Friday. So I decided to use th rifle I will be hunting with.
It is a Bucks County rifle I built five years ago.
The rifle has a 42 inch Rayl barrel, an L&R classic lock, and a single trigger that breaks at 2.25 lbs. I was using my trail walk load, 70 grains of Goex 2f, .530 Hornady ball, Jo Ann's cotton drill #40 lubed with bear oil. Hunting load is 100 grains , everything else is the same.
Top circle is an obvious 11, middle circle is either an 11 or a 13, very close I will leave it up to Justin. bottom circle is a 9.
Fun target. If I'm blessed to kill an elk early, I will shoot it again with a different rifle. Maybe I will shoot the smoothie.
Rest of this week I will be scouting.
Merry Christmas!!

Nice target, alacran.
Thank you Daryl.  But I must say I had an unfair advantage. It was a gorgeous day to shoot. The Sun was bright, the temperature was 55 f, and the wind was asleep.
