patternmakers vise
« on: December 02, 2020, 05:18:27 AM »
John Proud, Master Horner, "Wood Carvers Vise" published a few weeks ago in the Horn Book Fall 2020, is actually a patternmakers vise. This is on sale at Woodcraft thru 12/24/2020 for $94.99 regularly $144.99. I was talking to him recently and he did not know where he purchased his vise. They go on sale once a year, if you want one now is time to buy one.

Great news. Ironically, I was looking at their Patternmakers vise a couple days ago on line and was prepared to pay full price. I much prefer the sale price.

Can you only make guitars on it or can you make other stuff too?

You can make several different things on it but if you build a gun with it you’ll feel an unshakable urge to do a long AC/DC air guitar solo before each shot you take on the gun ever after.

They have two main differences as I noted:  Wheels in place of the handles we're used to on the other one, and they're RED!

painted RED.  Seems like something Mike would do!  :o

At first I thought I'd not like the wheels, and I might not, but also sometimes the knob catches on my clothing and can upset the apple cart.

I have the knobby green version, and got it on sale (of course) and will be glad to have another one when I can afford it.  I had NO IDEA how much I would use one of these.  Has become my main work station.

Gonna get me a can of good spray paint - purple?  orange?  Brighten up my building experiences.  I wasn't going to put a pattern maker's vise on the new workbench, but at that sale price, why not?  I will call it my "Gun maker's Vise", and not build guitars or mandolins or patterns on it.

I do have three workbenches done, and a table.  Good LED overhead lights, very bright.  Illuminating even.  Church friend gave me a big desk AND toted it in for me.

Made several file and chisel racks, a few other doodads.  Now, if I could magically inlet these two pistol barrels and their respective locks.  Waiting for my Armenian walnut Jaeger stock to come back from having the barrel and RR inletted.

Hoping to make some storage areas, AND keep the dad-gummed cats off the workbenches.....

I was eyeing them up for several years. Finally bought one, the green one, when I made a new workbench. Wasn't sure I'd like it either. I fell in love right away. I use it for all sorts of gun work, making bows, lots of stuff. I have 5 vises in the shop now and they all get used depending on the application, but this patternmakers vise gets used more than all the others combined. I shouldn't have waited.

One more thing.... it mounts to the bench with a threaded rod and big wing nut, and my bench has dog holes, so I can move it anywhere I want, or remove it if it's in the way, literally in 10 seconds.

Two comments: I cannot imagine how a maker of things would not find some uses for one of these. For the cats, maybe some double-sided tape or stick-side-up tape would adjust their courses to avoid such things, I've not tried it but wouldn't be above it.

I have one of the green ones. I really like it. But I don' t like the handle on the crank. My shop is crowded and bumping into it makes it drop whatever is in the jaws. I put a piece of thick leather over the rails to keep the wood from being damaged when I bump the handle and the stock crashes onto the rails. I have been thinking about cutting off the darned thing.

Bought one a couple of months ago, can't believe I made it this far without it. Been making Christmas presents for the grandkids out of wood, really is handy.

Got it because I have a Kibler Colonial on order. 58, medium grade wood.

I ordered one yesterday. I have a pattern makers vise similar to an Emmert vise I got that from Woodcraft, last summer I got the universal vise:
https://www.woodcraft.com/products/woodriver-universal-vise?via=573621f469702d06760016cd%2C576328a869702d20ec000b2f%2C576419ee69702d3baa0002ef#

which is good. I tossed around a bit whether I should get the universal vise or the pattern makers vise I am glad I waited until it was on sale. I also have a vintage bench vise which is real handy to have around for an all purpose vise.

You might make up new handles or just shorten the knob or replace with with a bit of wood. Or buy the "Luthier Red" version that comes with wheels.   Or trade with someone who has the luthier version.

Dave, that's a great setup, and I'll be moving in that direction when I re-set my shop.

By the way, when holding small things in this double pivoting device, I have learned to put a similar sized "dummy" in the other side such that the jaws get a better "parallel purchase" on the work for best security.

A few years ago I was in need of a good vise to work on the stocks.  I looked into the versa vise, gunmakers vises and decided to look for a used one on Ebay.   Found this one there and the price was right (read cheap) so arranged to have sent my way.  While the price was low it seems to be made pretty solid, certainly strong enough to work on a stock.  Obviously not on my bench as the moment, but will be by the weekend.

As everyone has noted, these are great vises. I only have one small problem with them. The handle sticks straight out and I got tired of poking myself in the stomach when I leaned in for close work, especially on my main bench. I have a few of these and modified the one I use on my main bench as below. The other option would be to eat less of my wife's cooking but after 40+ years, I am afraid she would get mad.

This is what pokes you in the stomach

I cut off the handle, and made a flat narrow area where I could fit a pivoting handle. I turned a handle on my lathe out of a piece of scrap steel and cut a slot to fit over the area I left where the old handle was. I drilled a hole for a steel pin, and peened the ends over. Now, I can turn the handle to close/open the vise and then pivot it out of the way if I need to lean in closer.

I have one and it's handy for a million different projects.

I broke one of the wooden jaws on mine.  It would be easy enough to cut/fit new ones, but does anyone know what they are lined with?

Replacement parts seem non existent.

Ridge,
The jaws are lined with Urethane. It's pricy but can be bought in small sheets. Some folks use leather or cork or rubber. If replacing the wood jaw, Baltic birch plywood is good stuff if you happen to have a scrap piece.
Here is a link to a site that sells replacement repair parts. Too expensive in my opinion.
