If it was me I get the 45 cal. Shot a few deer with it. Ok maybe a lot of deer, coyote an other critters. If you do your part it will do it's. Oldtravler

My opinion only:

If you already have a .40 cal., and you enjoy it, then get the .40 cal. Kibler kit. You already have all the accessories you will need. As you have said, it will be mostly for targets, fun shoots, and the occasional gopher, so you do not NEED anything larger. I have also found that smaller calibers give a lot more shots to the pound of powder and lead than the .54's and .58's, when you have to pay near double, just for living in Canada.

My .45 Kibler shipped Saturday, and was at my house by Monday afternoon. Hopefully the USPS is getting back in the groove after the holiday madness. The kit is great, you won't regret it.

I wish our mail moved that fast up here in Canuck land. By the time it clears customs and such I am guessing I will get it here in about a month. We will see. I would like to build it this winter and use it this summer in our local shoots.

I'm thinking of a Kibler Southern Mtn. Kit since they are lighter than the Colonial. I want a 45 but I see the twist rate is 70". This seems too slow and might require pretty high velocity to get it to shoot accurately. The 40 cal has a twist of 48" which seems better for lower velocities. I'm basing my thoughts on my old Douglas barreled 45 with a 66" twist, as well as the opinion of other experience shooters I know. Any thoughts on the matter??

Here's a chart I found on another forum.

Try multiplying the caliber by 1.2 to get the optimum ROT for a PRB. Here is a list for your convenience:

32 cal. = 38.4
36 cal. = 43.2
40 cal. = 48.0
45 cal. = 54.0
50 cal. = 60.0
54 cal. = 64.8
58 cal. = 69.4
62 cal. = 74.4
69 cal. = 82.8
72 cal. = 86.4

As you can see from this list, most barrel makers are making compromise ROTs for calibers, simply to cut down on the equipment they have to have to do all this. Better reasons, already stated above, is that the PRB can be stablilized fairly well with a compromise ROT. A 1:40 ROT will work for both .32 and .36. You will find 1:48 ROT barrels offered for barrels from .40 cal. through .54, but when you get to the .50 you will find some barrels that are 1:60, and at .54 some barrels that are 1:66. You will also see barrels in both .50 and .54 that a 1:72. Rifled Barrels in the larger bores tend to be in the 1:66- 1:75 inch range.

It is said that you have to use more powder to get higher velocity and stabilization in the slower rates of twist. In actuality, the slower ROT allows you a wider range of powder charges that will NOT send the ball away from your POA

It arrived and wahoo, what a beautiful piece. From the pics on the web it is hard to tell how slender and beautiful it is. I love it. The inletting is amazing. I cleaned off some little wood fuzz left by the cutter, squared up the back of the slot for the tang and the barrel fit perfectly just some careful light tapping and it slid in. Unbelievable how good it fits. The maple is super hard and has nice broad curl that has that 3d wave even before finishing. I tried the lock and it sets off a crazy bunch of hot sparks. The set triggers are very crisp.

I can’t wait to to put this together and get shooting it this summer. Next year a Colonial may have to happen....

I love nice wood in its many different forms. I am curious to know how this will look but I am guessing it will be very striking. You can’t tell in the picture but that 3 dimensional appearance of the waves is very deep and beautiful. Hopefully the aquafortis and tannic acid will help it pop.

I made some progress on the rifle last night. The barrel is pinned in place, the butt plate is installed, triggers installed and the lock is installed. I may do a few tweeks on the lock inlet to ensure it is completely sealed against the barrel and a bit of final fitting of the butt plate but it is coming along. Incredible quality. That lock is crazy hot, the sparks keep burning so need to keep it away from anything that can get burn holes in it.

I am afraid my interest got the best of me and I got into this kit pretty quickly. I should have spread the fun out but I am loving this thing!

I finished the installation of the kit parts tonight and the ramrod. Now I need to get some thin iron for a toe plate. I was tempted to put a banana patch box on it but I don’t want to cover the figure so I don’t think I am putting one on. Soon i will get to filling to final shape and putting the finish on. I have tannic acid and ferric nitrate but can’t decide if I should use the tannic acid on this wood or not. It is the hardest maple I have worked on so it may need the tannic acid to get the darker colours. It has real nice 3 dimensions to the curl so I want to highlight that not loose it. We will see.
