Nice crown - is that as-received?  If so, KUDOS to Jim Kibler.

Looks like it is coming along pretty fast.  Nice timing on the toe plate screws.

That's wonderful. It's so easy to do on the lathe after a mild chamfering with a cutting tool. Just a few seconds.
A very nice TOUCH, Jim.

One coat of tannic acid and a coat of aquafortis.  Now to let it dry before I heat it.

I blushed it and worked in one coat of tung oil.  I like the color so far.  The grsin will pop a bit more after I work a few coats in.
Now I am starting on finishing the metal.

Thanks,

Thanks I appreciate that.  You did amazing job creating this kit.  I may have to do a Colonial rifle next winter.

Tonight i draw filed the barrel tonight  and cleaned up the sights.  I also applied another coat of tung oil with 600 wet and dry paper and stained the ramrod. Soon I have to decide on a finish for the metal.  Jim wasn’t able to ship liquid finish to Canada so I need to produce my own patina solution.

I made some progress, i gave the barrel, trigger guard, toe plate, triggers a patina finish.  I gave them one round of rust blue finish then rubbed back with 800 grit Scotch bright pad.  I put it back together for fun.  I still need to do the lock and redo the ramrod pipes.  I havea few coats of Tung oil and gave it a bit of a satin finish.

I created a patina finish on the lock and redid the pipes.  I think I am going to add a simple peep sight as my eyes have trouble seeing the rear sight.

Looks great! I want to know what you do regarding the peep.
My kit should be about a month out.

The tannic acid and AF certainly gave you delightful colors. Your metal finishing came out nice and warm looking.  Well done. God bless, Marc

Thank you for the compliments, I am very happy with the end product.  Here is my first attempt at a peep sight.  I propose tried to make it too dainty so it acts like a ghost ring.  I think i will make another that has more steel around it and see which works best for my eyes. I think it will be more of a tombstone lshape.  They screw in and in the place of the tang bolt so are very easy to swap at the range.

It takes the place of the tang bolt, so is it threaded and screws into the triggerplate?   If so, what a great product and idea, you should market them for the rest of us.   :D

Yep, that is exactly right.  Pretty simple for sure.  Turning on the lathe was quick, shaping the head to shape a took bit of time but it wasn’t too bad.  I think someone should make these for sale, we are all getting older and our eyes don’t seem to be improving.  Maybe I could make them after I retire but my wife tells me I have 15 years to go....

Maybe she'll let you retire now since you have a side business to turn to.   ;)  Trust me, retirement is better than work.
