Gourd flasks
« on: December 17, 2020, 11:41:02 PM »
I don't even know if it's possible, but I was wondering if anyone has ever made a shot/ball flask out of a gourd.

If so, I'd be interested in seeing one. (Or several)

Greetings Mike,

I know there is at least one in Madison Grant's hunting pouch book.  I think it's on the page of containers for shot.  Are you thinking powder or shot flask?

Mike,

Of course you are thinking about a gourd for shot (or ball).  It says so right there in your original post.  I totally glossed right over that.

I cleaned out a couple of small gourds and made some simple stoppers for them.  Haven't put them into service yet.  I'll try to get out the camera and take a photo or two.  My old flip phone isn't on speaking terms with the internet so there is an extra step or two between taking the photo and posting it here.

All for the moment,
Kevin

I tried using a small gourd for a shot pouch, when I built my first tradegun over thirty years ago. I found they are delicate, and incredibly noisy for balls, or shot. But, I saw an old Ozark Mountain powder flask made from a small gourd that was wonderfully original, and quite artistic. They grew the gourd in an enclosed box of some sort with either woven basket material for the sides, or possibly some sort of chicken wire. So, the gourd when harvested had a woven pattern on the sides, and was flattened as well. Weather by age, or design, the pattern was darkened making the gourd look for all the world like it was woven.
My great grandmother, also from Arkansas, had a sewing “basket” that was made the same way. It was grown in a box and was square, with a wooden lid.

Thanks for the input gents,

I have a "poor boy" smoothbore and was just trying to come up with an "out of the box" idea for a poor man's homespun solution for carrying a hunt's worth of shot in his bag. I knew gourds were grown and used to fashion all kinds of household items... So i didn't think a gourd shot flask was too much of a stretch.

Other than the fact that gourds were grown and fashioned into useful items I know zip about the process... And as HH mentioned, I wondered how delicate they would be. But with the prices of gourds i have seen for sale, it it doesnt work Im not out of much but some time and effort.

If it doesnt work, I'll chalk it up to experience and move on to try something else.

Kevin, I look forward to the pics. If its too much effort don't go out of your way.

Alan that's pretty sweet. Bit fancier than what I'm looking for though.

Here's a couple I made. The smaller ones is for musket caps, the larger one for roundballs. For reinforcement, I wrapped the necks with sinew then wiped glue on the wrap.
