58 cal Jaeger project ( now completed) 😁👍😂
« on: December 18, 2020, 12:26:18 AM »
Well I got the Vogler project delivered and made it back home safe and sound. It’s now time to get the next project started. It will be a 58 cal. FCI barrel that Charlie made for me. The lock is one of Jim Chambers and all the other fittings including the stock came from Ron Scott. This will be a rather plain Jaeger with little carving but the great stock blank I got from Ron should should make up for that.

Let’s get started.

I'm glad you're inletting those parts and not me!

That wood doesn't need any carving to set it off. Great piece ought to make that brass pop too!

Mike I may have to take a shot or two of some Alabama Stump Water to settle my nerves before I start on that butt plate!  :o

Jim, I have much the same pieces from Ron - top notch castings, for sure.  And the wood that he has is almost unbelievable.  A gent with your talents can really do justice to the whole thing.

I have been touching up and polishing the brass, etc. Using a different lock.  As I did not have a bandsaw (nor a hand saw!), the wood has gone to Dave Keck for profiling, inletting the swamped .62 cal barrel, also from Charlie/FCI, and drilling the RR.  Hope to get it back soon tho, so I can tackle that awesome BP.

Gorgeous piece of wood and so big you have enough cut off to make a pistol stock or two! Almost another halfstock.

Craig,

I should send you a hand-saw.  :-)

I did get a small one, Richard, and a small bandsaw - AFTER sending the wood and barrel to Dave Keck.  Going broke replacing all my tools.

I've been thinking of sending a bottle of Oxpho cold blue to that fellow in Canada that's wanting some.  I can understand why the parts houses don't want to send stuff to Canada - puts them into a different bracket for taxes, duties, and tariff's.  Also something about international arms dealers comes into play, I think.

I'd like to see how you do on it. I have those same casting from Ron, waiting on the day I feel like punishing myself with tedious inletting.

I am back on the Jaeger project. I didn’t get to work on it over the Christmas and New Year holidays but I have gotten in a few days last week and this week. I am shutting down again until next week because I will be setting things up for my show happening later this week. Here are a few progress pictures.

Hopefully, this won't have too long of a pull.   I see many modern recreations that look very odd with pulls in the range of 13.75 or 14".  I'm no student of jaegers, but it seems to my eye originals were typically considerably shorter.  Looks like it will be a great project.

With a fairly straight stock, a shorter "pull" is certainly doable. 13 1/2" for me, shorter yet is doable,
as the butt is comfortably positioned on the pecs muscle. Just by tightening up that muscle moves the
butt out 1" from relaxed.

Thanks for the comments Jim and Daryl. I have not set the length of pull yet but I normally set it around 13 1/2" to 13 3/4". I usually do not set the LOP until I get the triggers installed.

Bama, Jim and Daryl,

I found with this type of rifle, getting it to look right is a challenge if we try and stretch out the butt-stock for a 'normal' modern pull.
You put my thoughts into words, Jim!
The relationship between the rear of the trigger guard, and the nose of the comb is V important.  If we try for a longer pull, we need a longer wrist to balance it, and then this doesn't line up right with the  trigger-guard extension.
Not wanting to put negative stuff in your head, Bama, but this takes a bit of sorting, More so than on most rifles.

Actually, if we Hold these rifles as they were at the time, head back and left elbow on hip-chest, (Like a cheek-stocked wheellock , but with a shoulder -stock)
the short -stock they were made with fits very well.  Front hand near the lock when aiming.
If we try to crawl up these stocks, they are Way too short!

Hope I didn't confuse the issue, but I know a long time can be spent getting this to Look right and handle right!

Bama,
You're doing a very fine job!!

Not having built but two of these with this being the second one :o I am far from an expert. My plan was to set the butt plate at the distance required to use the full height of the butt plate. I will try to figure what that distance is when I get back from the show.

Jim, I have some of Ron's wood for knife handles.  I really like the way it works, and the grain is awesome.

I have some photos of my original Jaeger that I would be happy to send you by email if you would like to see them.  Several are of the rifle apart that you do not get to see often.
kind regards, heinz

Taco I stabbed in the sides with a single bevel 1/2” flat chisel, then I used a gouge to remove most of the wood to make the grove and finished up with a round nosed ram rod plane. I will use a lollipop scraper to finish it smooth as a final step.

Just a little more progress on the Jaeger. I got the tang installed and inlet the lock, trimmed up the forestock. Next I am going to build the triggers from Ron’s castings and get those installed.
