Mounts on Carper rifles
« on: December 22, 2020, 04:10:22 AM »
Since some of my distant relatives lived in  the Beckley m, W. Va area in the 1809s, I am very much interested in the Carper rifle. From what I have seen on the Forum and in a book I have, their rifles were brass mounted and stocked with Curly maple. Does anyone know if they ever used brass furniture and other wood besides Curly Maple on their guns? Thanks! :)

Johnny Walker probably probably knows. He is a member here AKA as Carper. Send him a PM since he may miss your post.

I have never seen any of the early rifles made by my folks.  I read a a description of a rifle stocked in 1840’s  in “ swirly chestnut” ( no idea) and inlaid with shapes cut from mussel shells from the New River( which resembled pearl) . When you get up to close to Civil War and beyond is where you see the squirrel rifles . They operated a sawmill too and thus you always see really nice wood on their guns. They favored Birdseye on the fanciest pieces made by Joe Sr. Later in his life.  They cast a particularly heavy trigger guard of brass some almost rusty red in color until about 1880 and then started using what appears purchased castings like you see today. Often they inlaid other metals into their cap boxes and inlays. Such as copper stars and copper pinwheels inlaid into the brass. Something you don’t see much. Hope this helps. Johnny Walker.

The red colored furniture is very interesting. I have in my stash of antique gun parts a small narrow buttplate that looks like it’s cast of red bronze. When compared to other antique castings it’s very red in color. I have no clue to it’s origins. Maybe it’s from West Virginia.

I think aspenshadeltd.com had a couple carper rifles for sale awhile back.  Even if he no longer has them he may have photos.
