ALR January 2021 target match [ please note add on ]
« on: January 02, 2021, 01:01:13 AM »
Happy New year everyone.   Hard to believe that I won the 3 way tie in Dec by luck of the " draw "  !!

I would like to suggest a target for January which I found on the printable targets site. [ bullseye target # 18 ]

Outer ring would score an 8, then next a 9 and the centre ring a 10 with of course the centre an " X "

Off hand at 25 yards, but any shot on paper , not in the rings is scored as a miss.

Also, just to make things a bit different, and hopefully have some smoothbore entries, you are

allowed 7 shots, count your best 5  .    Best score possible is a 50 5 X

You can submit  3 targets.   1/2 ball rule.  Shoot as many as you like.

Prize is a period type combination tool

My computer skills don't amount to much, so I have sent a link re the target to Daryl, so I hope he can share it ASAP.   Meanwhile, I'll keep trying to post it

Target will be printed on a standard sheet of printing paper

ADD ON !!!       As many of you may know, I do most of my hunting with a smoothbore.  I'm going to go all out on this match and will offer another prize of "  The Kentucky Rifle " book by John Dillin.
[published by George Shumway]  to the best smoothbore target submitted.  Same rules.  Feel free to enter both rifle and smoothbore if you like.   I really want to see what the smoothy shooters can do  :)

The prize looks great - I need.

https://www.targets.ws/bullseye-targets.htm

I think this is the Target Bob wants.
He has asked me to add anything I think pertinent/helpful to his match.

https://www.targets.ws/shooting-targets/bullseye-target-18.pdf

I printed one off and on my printer (black only), the centre is almost black, a VERY dark grey.

I would suggest that if you need a larger aiming point than the black .832" square, a larger 'bud'(black centre)

could be stapled or taped over the middle of the target, or placed wherever it is needed, as in chunk shooting
in order to hit the centre of this target.
Correction made to the "X" ring size. I measure it as .832", not 1". I think that is a very good size for the centre & the method of scoring
best 5 out of 7 - quite lenient.

Yes Richard, we ALL need a lot more practice.  I can "see" this month being a flintlock-only month. No "cheating" with the big gun.

Rule clarification Bob, please?  Is the intent:  Three targets submission for score, or you're only allowed to shoot three targets?

Sounds good to me, Taylor. I printed off some 'bud' spotters
may or may not need one.

Three targets submitted for score.  Shoot 20 if you want.  That's the whole point of this as far I I'm concerned !

For those of us without a printer, can we get the size of the circles and just draw with a compass?

Taylor,

Thank you for the very kind offer, but I am sure that others will also be bereft of a printer, so if we could get the size of the circles, we could likely do it the old way.
PS, we Do have an old printer, but it is a terrible old reprobate of a thing, and we do not get along together!l!
We are not on speaking terms...   ;)

We have an old computer and a relatively new printer.  Until I could get my IT son in law over here to reprogram things, the printer and computer would not communicate.  Everything is working smoothly now.   Knowing what buttons to push, and in which order, makes a big difference. Does that help?

Richard, I will see if I can print a copy and then measure the diameters of the rings.

Richard and others:
If using a compass, then 1/2of these would be the setting, of course.
Outer 8 ring is 8 1/16" OD
9 ring is 6 13/16" OD
10 ring is 4 1/8" OD
X square is 13/16" OD square, set as a double ended diamond.
The inner circle in the X is immaterial.

It's too windy today, maybe tomorrow for us.
Interesting addition of a smoothbore event - Bravo Bob!

Thank you Daryl, that should do nicely.

Taylor, when I was a little lad, the only button was the doorbell!   I have not improved greatly since those days.
Oh yes, and the starter button on the floor of the car...  Two buttons.    :-)

And yes, Bravo Bob!
I will try this with Dudley.....my short snapping matchlock.  (smooth bore)

It is a beautiful snowy, slightly overcast day here, only minus 6 or so . I thought I'd start this off with a smoothbore target just to get things rolling [ even though I'm not "competing "  ]

Took a walk back to my tipi and followed some deer tracks which ran into some coyote tracks !
Anyway, 7 shots with the  20 bore.  Counting the best 5 gives me a 49.   This a very smoothbore friendly target

bob in the woods,  This AM I looked at the printed targets on my desk and thought about using my smoothbore for this month's Frolic.  If the weather cooperates, I may do just that!

Good shooting Steven.

After a really close look, and it's really really close, I'm changing the score to 50 2 X and 50 3 X
That one ball on the right hand target is a hair's breath away from  not being 1/2 in the X , but after enlarging the target , it's in to my eyes .  Keep shooting. This is exciting !

Why not shoot both rifle and smoothbore ?    The more shooting, the better.

By some miracle we were able to acquire two printer cartridges for our printer... One black, one color. And we are slated for some better weather soon.

Ill print a few off and see what I can do at 25 yds off hand.

Beats mine Nice shooting, Steven. Taylor did better than I did.
I scored mine as 49 1X. LOL- just couldn't keep it together. The outside at
1 o'clock was my 7th shot. I started with the 2 nines, 1st and second.

.50 Beck
70gr. 3F GOEX .495" cast and swaged - mixed.
10 ounce denim I measure at .021"
25 yard (laser)  offhand
