Black Powder
« on: January 06, 2021, 08:12:40 PM »
 Hey everyone,

Figure I would throw this out there before I have to spend an arm and a leg to get any shipped to me, but does anyone in Florida  know where I might be able to pick up a few cans of powder? I’m having difficulty finding any store in the state that has any in stock, let alone regularly carries it.

Thanks for any suggestions,

Davison

Same for Alabama.  I just mail order.    Even if you find it, if it is very far away, the postage would be covered by time, gas, and lunch to drive any distance to go get it.

Our local Bass Pro carries it but you have to ask for it. They don’t leave it out on the shelf

Bess Pro is an idea. Graff's ships reasonably, but you would need to order more than a few cans to make it worth while
due to the haz/mat fee. I think it is a one-time thing and it matters not how much is ordered the haz/mat fee remains the same.

Thanks for the responses...I tried my local bass pro, but they don’t carry it. Perhaps i’ll try some others in the state, but looks like mail order is the way to go.

At one time Buffalo Arms would allow you to order as little as 4 lbs... However the Hazmat fee would increase your "per pound" price quite a bit on 4 lbs. Of course the more you order the more the fee is reduced when spread across multiple pounds.

I do not know if they will still allow that small an order.

Edit: I looked at Buffalo Arms' site. Minimum order is 5 lbs.

Graf is selling GOEX in their own label.  I just ordered 25 pounds.  I'll split that with a friend, and it worked out to be 18.50 per pound.  I think shipping was 10, and hazmat fee 15.  So shipping was only 1 dollar per pound.

Take a look at Jack's Powder Keg.  They sell a powder they call Jack's Battle Powder or re-enactor powder.  It's Goex powder, 3F, uncoated.  I've been using it for about 5 years and love it.  Without the graphite coating it shoots much cleaner than regular Goex.  I have had no trouble with clumping.  Downside is 25# minimum order.  I just got a shipment back in Nov., $16 a pound--delivered.

I've also had great accuracy/performance with "Jack's Battle Powder".  A friend and I have burned quite a bit of it, plus it's a good buy.  I still may have over half a pound of it left, in fact.

Newbie question:
just out of curiosity what does the coating do/provide to the powder? (grain durability? moisture retardant?...)

Thanks

Richard, the last GOEX I bought was from Ken Steinhauer out of Edmonton and it was $26/ pound CDN.  That was several years ago now though.  Would you like his contact info?

Knowing powder will never be less expensive than today, whenever I need it, I buy as much as I can afford, still staying within safe storage laws for Canada.

Taylor,

The last bulk lot I got was from Ken....must have been about same time you got your last lot, as price was around the same!
He used to come to our rendezvous down here.    Pretty deadly with his smoothbore!
I gather Hazel isn't doing too well these days.

I shot with Ken & Hazel at the Western Canadian Championships in Manitoba back in the early 90s. Hope they are doing ok. Nice folks to shoot and camp with. Didn't know he sold powder but did do some guiding.

"Native Guides of Alberta", was the business, seems to me.
Yes - they are both very nice people. Hazel is such a graceful lady.
That is how I always saw her at rendezvous.
Looking forward to seeing them both in August/September. I need more
powder for my little .69. I'm down to about 15 pounds.

The graphite is added mostly to prevent clumping, which is moisture related, and pourability.  The graphite makes the grains "slicker" so they slide easier.

Daryl,

If you're down to your last 15 pounds, that means you only get to shoot the January match about twice!

Re Hazel,
I don't think she travels anymore to shoots.   A very fine lady.
