Interesting Trade Gun relic on Ebay
« on: January 17, 2021, 01:56:28 AM »
There's a trade gun relic on Ebay with some interesting engraving on the barrel and butt plate. I have no interest in the gun.

It would be a lot more interesting if the seller wasn't trying to jack up the pricing by yanking the lock and most likely selling it separately using "eBay guidelines" as a cover.  Ebay lets whole lot slide as long as they think they'll get their $$$ out of it.

When I see people break up old pieces on eBay and sell them in multiple auctions, I immediately think...  well I can't really print it here.

I'm with you Eric. When Fleabay first started out I bought a 1728 French Infantry musket from a guy in Canada. I had been in an old church in Montreal that was being torn down. The kicker was that the guy listed it all in pieces. I think there were four lots with all of the parts. I just noticed the auction when it it started so I wrote the guy and practically pleaded with him to sell me all of the parts. I made him a good offer on it and he did. I just couldn't fathom that someone would break up an original 1728 musket, and this was even before Ebay started banning gun sales.

I asked the ebay seller if he has the original correct lock for the gun, and he answered that he does. Also, that he will list it for sale next week.

It's a shame that he didn't list the gun here all in one piece.

The decorative design on the barrel reminds me of these  two guns made by Hendrick Sleur.

eBay and PayPal are vehemently anti gun organizations.

They’re okay with parts but selling a complete gun, and yes eBay considers a musket a gun, is a recipe for a potential lifetime ban and for some people eBay is big part of their livelihood.

In times like these it can be beneficial to have a bit of empathy instead of judging.

As a longtime ebayer (bhmack) I can tell you that is right. If a complete musket is listed it’s delisted by eBay quickly and the seller gets a strike. They are busting them up for that reason. Often you will see all the parts listed one after another in the search. That’s a guy skirting the rules, as he should. Selling the parts several days apart is probably just a guy not thinking it through.

SOLD, for $1402.00.
Now, next comes the lock, or so he says. I'm guessing the lock might go for 5/600 bucks. The guy that got the gun wanting it, and maybe another guy not wanting to let him get it!

Some gotta win, some gotta lose. Good-time Charlie’s got the blues.

Pretty sure it’s a colonial restock of a French gun, probably New England. I wish it had gone for considerably less, as I found it quite interesting.

Gentlemen, I can assure you the gentleman that Acquired that weapon knew what he was doing. And the 2 other serious bidders on that weapon are very knowledgeable and serious collectors. And both are well respected members of this forum
That sir was an absolutely untouched example of an early trade gun . Sad that individual who put it up for sale used that method ( having to piece it out ) to sell it. At the right auction site that weapon complete would have brought 5 or 6 times that much....
Anyone who can appreciated and collect weapons of the fur trade dream of finding an unmolested weapon like that ! No the man who purchased that weapon knew it would not sell cheap.

If he gets the lock the price is reasonable.   They  are quite a few wonderful long rifles that we think are just marvelous that were in such a condition.  However if it was mine I would leave it as is.  Well once I had the lock back in.

I mentioned that it reminded me of Sleur's work, well  the engraving on the barrel, but even the bow on the trigger guard has similar simple engraving like the Sleur Fowler Hayes had.

Hopefully the guy will get the lock and post pictures together here.

Did anyone else notice that the guard, in addition to having the front extension missing, also had the tip missing from the very end of the handrail?  And unlike the missing front extension, there was no sign of an inlet for the missing bit at the tail. This suggested to me that this guard is not sitting in the stock which was its first home. And if that is the case then this could be a colonial restock of a French gun. Of course this is speculation. By if the new owner finds it is stocked in cherry, I’d not be surprised. Another explanation is that this guard is not the original guard on this gun. The original guard was somehow lost or destroyed and this was popped in as a replacement. Old guns have interesting mysteries.

I own one of those that hasn't been restocked. Belgian/Dutch. Liege/Utrecht. Ca 1730ish. I' have come to the conclusion the French were pedaling them. I like the "Rare 20ga" part..... ;D

I also like the $1400 part for a restocked lockless gun. Makes my investment look pretty sound.....

Tom Patton would have been interested in this one. He had some that were similar. I’ll be very interested to see the lock.

Rest easy gentlemen, you will see this gun again, and the new owner would never do a thing to it but get the lock back in it ....!
Mike would sure like to see photos of your Fowler with that treatment on the bbl.

Panzerschwein,  if you were inferring to “snap”was to disrespect the others who commented on this topic. Not by any means was that my intent. My intent was to let those who commented know that the person who paid that amount for that gun, was not a new collector, or foolish. The fact is he has been collecting since the late 1960’s. And is well known to most members of the KRA, the CLA, Knoxville show, Lake Cumberland, Alabama show, and the Va. shows. So when I said worry not they would see this weapon, I can assure you it will be at those shows, in the condition as seen on the auction site, only the lock will be on it. A good untouched artifact should be appreciated for what it is, not be determined by the pedigree of the person who owns it. This man has owned some of the best, but I’m glad he is just another old porch dog and I call him friend.
And as Forrest Gumph said, “ And that’s all I’m gonna say about that”

The forestock from the rear pipe forward is a restoration.  The lock is old and english, but a  recent replacement. Tom Patton had at least  4 0f these.

Fellows here’s the lock for this trade gun....!

This is the configuration this lock was in the last time this weapon was used, the whole gun is unmolested. And everyone knows how hard it is to find them that way . COVID permitting it will be at the Knoxville show
