looking for ideas

 All,
 I have a stock blank and find it has a 3/8 ramrod groove/hole when I should have specified 7/16. Any ideas as to the best way to enlarge it to the 7/16?. thanks much

Run a 7/16" drill into the hole.  The drill will likely follow the existing hole.  7/16" is very large...will you explain why you want a rod hole that big?  I will understand...my S. Hawken has a 1/2" rod hole.

Might want to enlarge the existing groove a bit to help the drill follow the existing hole accurately

Also, if it is a full stock you might want to expand the RR grove just a tad. Scrape or round bent file is what comes to mind. Just seen Mike's reply and we agree.  ;) :)

Its a 48" .75 cal rifled barrel by Rayl.  1.250 at the breech and 1.10 at the muzzle. I'm thinking the 3/8" ramrod just wouldnt look right let alone be able to load a tight patched round ball that size.

Have you thought about tapering the ramrod?  You need graduated sized thimbles but you can go from 1/2" at the muzzle, or even 9/16 down to 3/8 at the rear pipe with no trouble.

Scotty, 3/8" will be more than adequate. Used a tip on the ramrod that is large enough to keep it relatively centered. Heinz's suggestions are also spot on, and correct.

yes at this point I'm thinking the same way, either stay with 3/8 or do the taper. I think I'll wait and see how it looks when I start on the upper. Still going to make the 7/16 drill just in case!

I think 7/16 would look too large.  I just did a 20g smooth early Dutch barrel inlet for a student in Ian Pratt and Ken Gahagans csouthern Ohio workshop and drilled it 5/15" per Ian's request.  3/8" tapered to 7/16 or even 1/2" is how I would go.

I totally agree with Dave use a tapered ramrod. Start with a 1/2 inch blank taper it to 3/8 or a frog hair less to run smoothly through the entry pipe. I’d use a 7/16 dia first pipe. And the second a 32nd less if I were making the pipes and a 3/8 rear. I built a .75 caliber rifle a number of years ago for stake shoots for a customer, and this was how I approached it. BJH
